Characterization of a novel dual murine model of chemotherapy-induced oral and intestinal mucositis

Ali I. Mohammed et al.

Summary: Oral and intestinal mucositis are inflammatory diseases commonly seen in cancer patients undergoing chemo-radiotherapy, resulting in significant treatment disruption. We have developed a murine model using 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) to reproduce the clinical features of both oral and intestinal mucositis, including severe atrophy and damage, as well as weight loss and mild to moderate diarrhea.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive overview of animal models used in the study of chemotherapy-induced mucositis. The results reveal a large variation in the models used to simulate mucositis in animals. Further research is needed to define optimal protocols that improve the applicability of the findings to humans.

Understanding chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis and strategies to improve gut resilience

Alexander T. Sougiannis et al.

Summary: Intestinal mucositis, a common side effect of chemotherapy, involves damage to the intestinal mucosa and disruption of physiological functions. Understanding its pathophysiology and symptomatology is crucial in reducing negative consequences. Prophylaxis, early diagnosis, and symptom management are essential for improved survival outcomes in cancer patients.

Chemotherapeutics-Induced Intestinal Mucositis: Pathophysiology and Potential Treatment Strategies

David Dahlgren et al.

Summary: Chemotherapeutics-induced intestinal mucositis (CIM) is a common gastrointestinal toxicity in cancer patients due to the rapid proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells and complex immunological interactions with gut microbiota. CIM often leads to dose-reduction, decreasing the efficacy of anticancer treatment, and effective strategies for prevention and treatment are still lacking.
