Glycoside hydrolase processing of the Pel polysaccharide alters biofilm biomechanics and Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence

Erum Razvi et al.

Summary: Pel exopolysaccharide biosynthetic loci are widespread biofilm matrix determinants in bacteria. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the glycoside hydrolase activity of PelA decreases adherent biofilm biomass and generates the low molecular weight secreted form of the Pel exopolysaccharide. Secreted Pel contributes to the biomechanical properties of the biofilm and decreases the virulence of P. aeruginosa in Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster.

The BDSF quorum sensing receptor RpfR regulates Bep exopolysaccharide synthesis in Burkholderia cenocepacia via interaction with the transcriptional regulator BerB

Elisabeth Steiner et al.

Summary: The BDSF quorum sensing receptor RpfR is a negative regulator of the bep gene cluster in B. cenocepacia. There is a correlation between intracellular c-di-GMP levels and bep expression, except when the intracellular c-di-GMP level is changed by site directed mutagenesis of the EAL or GGDEF domain of RpfR. RpfR and BerB physically interact and give specificity to the regulation of the bep genes.

Xylella fastidiosa causes transcriptional shifts that precede tylose formation and starch depletion in xylem

Brian Ingel et al.

Summary: Pierce's disease in grapevines is caused by the bacterial pathogen Xylella fastidiosa. The disease induces extensive tylose-mediated vessel occlusions, particularly in susceptible V. vinifera, with significant transcriptomic reprogramming occurring during early stages. Genes associated with tylose formation and drought stress were up-regulated, while photosynthesis and carbon fixation genes were down-regulated, correlating with starch depletion in ray cells and tylose synthesis in vessels.
