Quality-of-Life and Recurrence Outcomes Following Laparoscopic Elective Sigmoid Resection vs Conservative Treatment Following Diverticulitis Prespecified 2-Year Analysis of the LASER Randomized Clinical Trial

Alexandre Santos et al.

Summary: This randomized clinical trial compared elective sigmoid resection to conservative treatment for patients with recurrent, complicated, or persistent painful diverticulitis. The results showed that elective sigmoid resection was effective in preventing recurrent diverticulitis and improving quality of life within 2 years.

Comparing Laparoscopic Elective Sigmoid Resection With Conservative Treatment in Improving Quality of Life of Patients With Diverticulitis The Laparoscopic Elective Sigmoid Resection Following Diverticulitis (LASER) Randomized Clinical Trial

Alexandre Santos et al.

Summary: Elective laparoscopic sigmoid resection improves quality of life in patients with recurrent, complicated, or persistent painful diverticulitis but carries a 10% risk of major complications.

Long-term outcomes of Hartmann's procedure versus primary anastomosis for generalized peritonitis due to perforated diverticulitis: follow-up of a prospective multicenter randomized trial (DIVERTI)

M. Loire et al.

Summary: Long-term outcomes of patients with generalized peritonitis due to perforated diverticulitis were analyzed after undergoing Hartmann's procedure (HP) or primary resection anastomosis (PRA). The study found that PRA was associated with fewer long-term complications, better quality of life, reduced incisional hernia rate, and decreased need for reoperation compared to HP. Long-term survival was not compromised by the PRA approach. Future studies are needed to evaluate the use of protective stomas.
