An Overview of Oxidative Stress, Neuroinflammation, and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Daniel Mihai Teleanu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the correlation between oxidative stress and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It also discusses the impact of oxidative stress on the inflammatory response. Antioxidants are considered potential therapeutic options for these disorders.

Neuroprotection of Gastrodia elata polyphenols against H2O2-induced PC12 cell cytotoxicity by reducing oxidative stress

Weijian Tan et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress plays a role in aging and neurodegenerative disorders, and foods containing phenolic compounds may have preventive effects against Alzheimer's disease. Gastrodia elata, a traditional Chinese medicinal and food plant, has shown potential for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The study suggests that Gastrodia elata polyphenols have neuroprotective benefits that can prevent or treat Alzheimer's disease and could be used as a reference for the development of functional foods or drugs.

Chrysin alleviates lipopolysaccharide-induced neuron damage and behavioral deficits in mice through inhibition of Fyn

Qingchen Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that chrysin inhibits the activation of Fyn kinase, alleviating neuroinflammation-induced neuron damage and behavior deficits. It also reduces the expression of inflammatory molecules by inhibiting microglial activation.

Acteoside and ursolic acid synergistically protects H2O2-induced neurotrosis by regulation of AKT/mTOR signalling: from network pharmacology to experimental validation

Yan-Jie Qu et al.

Summary: This study utilized network pharmacology and cell experiments to explore the mechanism of UA + ATS in treating AD. The results showed that UA and ATS regulate multiple targets and signaling pathways against AD pathogenesis, and synergistically protect against neurodegeneration through the regulation of the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

Emerging roles of oxidative stress in brain aging and Alzheimer's disease

Andra Ionescu-Tucker et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are metabolic byproducts that can be toxic at high levels and have been linked to cognitive aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Therapeutics like antioxidants, caloric restriction, and physical activity can reduce oxidation and prevent cognitive decline in brain aging and AD. Long term physical activity shows promise in improving cognitive health by reducing ROS levels and promoting optimal function.

Bavachin produces immunoadjuvant activity by targeting the NFAT signaling pathway

Young-Hee Jin et al.

Summary: Bavachin activates NFAT-mediated transcription in human T cell line in vitro, and when administered with antigen in mice, it enhances T cell responses and specific antibody production. This suggests that Bavachin has immunoadjuvant and immunomodulation effects through NFAT signaling pathway activation.

Screening of hepatotoxic compounds in Psoralea corylifolia L., a traditional Chinese herbal and dietary supplement, using high-resolution mass spectrometry and high-content imaging

Ge-zi Shi et al.

Summary: This study established a methodology for rapid screening and identification of hepatotoxic compounds in Psoralea corylifolia L. using high-content imaging, ultra-performance liquid chromatography, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Spectra-toxicity correlation analysis identified toxic compounds related to hepatotoxicity, while high-content imaging verified toxicity intensity. The study confirmed the hepatotoxicity of six putative compound monomers in PCL, demonstrating the results of spectra-toxicity correlation analysis.

Five Constituents Contributed to the Psoraleae Fructus-Induced Hepatotoxicity via Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Apoptosis

Zhaojuan Guo et al.

Summary: This study found that the ethanol extraction process aggravated the hepatotoxicity of Psoraleae Fructus, with bavachin, psoralidin, bavachinin, neobavaisoflavone, and bakuchiol identified as the main toxic ingredients. These constituents induced cell apoptosis, increased lipid accumulation and reactive oxygen species levels, while decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential. The mechanism may be associated with oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage-mediated apoptosis.

Pharmacokinetic study on the interaction between pachymic acid and bavachin and its potential mechanism

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: The co-administration of pachymic acid and bavachin resulted in altered pharmacokinetic profiles of bavachin, including increased AUC, prolonged half-life, and decreased clearance in vivo. Pachymic acid enhanced the metabolic stability of bavachin while inhibiting its transport. Furthermore, pachymic acid was found to inhibit the activity of CYP2C9.
