Prevalence and risk factors for vascular calcification based on the ankle-brachial index in the general population: a cross-sectional study

Shengnan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of vascular calcification based on the ankle-brachial index (ABI) value and analyzed the risk factors for vascular calcification in the general population. The results showed that the overall prevalence of vascular calcification was high and differed between males and females. The risk factors for vascular calcification also differed between genders, including age, body mass index, blood pressure, and lipid levels.

The combination of malnutrition-inflammation and functional status limitations is associated with mortality in hemodialysis patients

Eiichiro Kanda et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of Malnutrition-Inflammation-Complex (MIC) and low functional status (FS) is strongly associated with mortality in hemodialysis patients. Identification of MIC and poor FS may help decrease adverse clinical outcomes in this setting.

Data Challenges in Addressing Chronic Kidney Disease in Low- and Lower-Middle-Income Countries

Benjamin Talbot et al.

Summary: The burden of chronic kidney disease is increasing globally, especially in low- and lower-middle-income countries where access to treatment is poor. Developed healthcare systems are better equipped to handle the treatment of CKD compared to developing countries. Availability of data plays a crucial role in understanding disease burden and ensuring effective investments in treatments and healthcare resources.

Differentiating the causes of adynamic bone in advanced chronic kidney disease informs osteoporosis treatment

Mathias Haarhaus et al.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease have an increased risk of fractures due to impaired bone quality and quantity. Pharmacological therapy can improve bone mineral density and reduce fracture risk in moderate CKD, but its efficacy in advanced CKD remains uncertain. Adynamic bone disease has emerged as the predominant form of renal osteodystrophy, commonly associated with poor outcomes.

Malnutrition-Inflammation Complex Syndrome: A Cause of Low Parathyroid Hormone in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

Rishi Raj et al.

Summary: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is commonly related to low calcium, high phosphorus, and low vitamin D levels, leading to high-turnover bone disease. On the other hand, low PTH levels may be caused by the malnutrition inflammation complex syndrome (MICS), but the optimal management remains unclear.

Bram C. S. de Vries et al.

Summary: This study found that a higher pre-transplant plasma K+ level is associated with an increased risk of interventions necessary to resolve hyperkalaemia within 48 hours after renal transplantation.
