Intelligent COVID-19 screening platform based on breath analysis

Cuili Xue et al.

Summary: An intelligent system based on volatile organic compound (VOC) biomarkers in human breath and machine learning models was constructed for rapid screening of COVID-19 patients and controlling the epidemic. Significant differences were found in the VOC profiles of COVID-19 and control groups, and an optimized support vector machine model achieved high accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1 score in discriminating COVID-19 patients. The system showed superiority compared to other machine models and has great potential in clinical application.

Breath Metabolites to Diagnose Infection

Amalia Z. Berna et al.

Summary: Breath analysis shows potential as a diagnostic method for infectious diseases by detecting volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath. It is noninvasive, safe, and easy to perform. However, challenges such as poor standardization of breath collection and analysis, as well as a lack of validation studies, need to be addressed.

Exhaled VOCs can discriminate subjects with COVID-19 from healthy controls

Mark Woollam et al.

Summary: The expression of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the exhaled breath of COVID-19 patients is altered, and analyzing these VOCs can detect COVID-19 infection. Machine learning algorithms can distinguish COVID-19 positive patients from COVID-19 negative patients with high accuracy. After recovery, the VOCs dysregulated by COVID-19 return to baseline levels.

Summary: The study found that the characteristics of COVID-19 in breath differ between the Delta-predominant and Omicron-predominant variant waves. Accuracies improve when samples from these waves are modeled separately rather than as one universal approach.

Summary: This study characterized the exhaled breath from mechanically ventilated adults with COVID-19 using real-time proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The analysis was able to differentiate between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 ARDS with high accuracy. Characteristic volatile compounds were identified in the exhaled breath of COVID-19 patients, showing potential for early diagnosis.

Summary: The rapid screening of COVID-19 is crucial and can be achieved by analyzing breath-borne volatile organic compounds (VOC) with machine learning. The developed technology shows high precision in distinguishing COVID-19 from other respiratory infections, providing a novel concept for non-invasive rapid point-of-care-test screening for COVID-19 in various scenarios.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the role of exhaled breath volatile biomarkers in identifying patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection. The results showed that GC-MS-detected exhaled breath biomarkers were able to identify PCR-positive COVID-19 patients. External replication of these compounds is needed to validate the results.
