Alkylated epidermal creatine kinase as a biomarker for sulfur mustard exposure: comparison to adducts of albumin and DNA in an in vivo rat study

Dirk Steinritz et al.

Summary: This study identified a new biomarker CK B-type as a local biomarker for sulfur mustard (SM) exposure on the skin. A novel micro liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method was developed to monitor CK-adducts and compared with established DNA and albumin biomarkers. The results suggest that CK-adduct is highly appropriate as a local dermal biomarker in exposed skin.

Summary: The study compared the efficacy of RSDL and FE following exposure to sulfur mustard and VX, finding both to be highly effective against the chemical agents, but ultimately concluding that FE is preferred as a universal decontaminant for mass casualty scenarios.
