Explainable heat-related mortality with random forest and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) models

Yesuel Kim et al.

Summary: Climate change-induced heat increase has worsened the urban heat environment, damaging human health and resulting in heat-related mortality. Developing effective forecasting tools is crucial in responding to heat-related damage. However, accurately predicting heatwave damage is challenging in regions with varying conditions in a city due to diverse distribution of climatic, demographic, and socioeconomic sectors across local areas. In this study, a random forest-based model was developed to estimate the occurrence of heat-related mortality within a city's detailed spatial unit. The model achieved accuracy, F1-score, and AUC values of 90.3%, 94.75%, and 86% respectively through hyperparameter optimization. The interpretation of the model's estimation results from both global and local perspectives revealed that demographic, socioeconomic, and climatic sectors contributed the most to the estimation process. This study is the first to explore partial scenarios of heat-related mortality through the development and interpretation of a spatial unit machine learning-based occurrence estimation model.
