Residual stresses in gas tungsten arc welding: a novel phase-field thermo-elastoplasticity modeling and parameter treatment framework

Baharin Ali et al.

Summary: This study embeds a phase-field model into a thermo-elastoplastic finite element model to simulate the GTAW process and estimate residual stresses in metallic components. The tracking of the moving melting front and consideration of temperature- and phase-field-dependent material properties allow for a detailed analysis and simulation of the metal material.

Experimental study and numerical modeling of the thermo-hydro-mechanical processes in soil freezing with different frost penetration directions

A. H. Sweidan et al.

Summary: This research work presents an experimental and numerical study of the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes that occur during soil freezing. The study distinguishes between two thermal states, focusing on thermal transient state and (quasi-) steady state. A numerical model based on continuum mechanical theory and phase-field modeling is proposed, showing capability in describing the freezing of saturated soils.

Variational modeling of hydromechanical fracture in saturated porous media: A micromechanics-based phase-field approach

Jacinto Ulloa et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel variational phase-field model to describe fracture processes in saturated porous media. The model utilizes a micromechanics-based theory to connect field variables with physical mechanisms at the microcrack level, where damage and plasticity arise from microcrack growth and frictional sliding. The model also considers hydromechanical coupling effects and incorporates a non-associative frictional plasticity law.

A multiscale LBM-TPM-PFM approach for modeling of multiphase fluid flow in fractured porous media

Mohamad Chaaban et al.

Summary: In this paper, a reliable micro-to-macroscale framework is presented to model multiphase fluid flow through fractured porous media. The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is utilized within the phase-field modeling (PFM) of fractures to achieve this. New phase-field-dependent relationships for various parameters are proposed and a multiscale concept for coupling is achieved. Numerical simulations on real microgeometries of fractured porous media validate the reliability of the model.

Phase-Field Modelling of Interactions Between Hydraulic Fractures and Natural Fractures

Xiaoxuan Li et al.

Summary: Hydraulic fracturing is a widely used technique in unconventional reservoirs. The interactions between hydraulic fracture and natural fracture can have a significant impact on the fracture patterns and subsequent productivity. In this study, a phase-field model is used to investigate the influence of in-situ stress, fracturing operational parameters, and natural fracture orientation and strength on the fracture propagation path. The results provide insights into the mechanism behind different propagation patterns and factors affecting fracture complexity.

A global-local approach for hydraulic phase-field fracture in poroelastic media

Fadi Aldakheel et al.

Summary: This work extends phase-field modeling of hydraulic fractures in porous media towards a Global-Local approach, where the failure behavior is analyzed in a local domain while a simplified system of equations is solved in the surrounding medium. The two domains are coupled with Robin-type interface conditions, allowing fractures to propagate within the local domain. A predictor-corrector strategy is adopted to dynamically adjust the local domain to the current fracture pattern.
