Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) and Associated Pathoge Collected From Domestic Animals and Vegetation in Stann Creek District, Southeastern Belize, Central America

Summary: Data on the prevalence and distribution of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Belize are lacking. This study collected and molecularly identified ticks and screened them for tick-borne pathogens in two villages in Stann Creek District, Belize. The most common tick species identified was Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The study also found ticks carrying Rickettsia parkeri and an unidentified Ehrlichia species. The results suggest that dogs could be useful sentinel animals for tick surveillance in Belize.

Summary: This study presents data on free-living ticks collected in three natural areas in Costa Rica using different sampling methods (flagging and CO2 traps). The study found variations in tick species and individual numbers between the sites, and differences in the effectiveness of flagging and CO2 traps for collecting different life stages of ticks. This study is the first to compare these two sampling methods in three different environmental areas in Costa Rica.

Ticks and tick-borne Rickettsia in El Salvador

Summary: During the period from May to November 2013, ticks were collected from various hosts in different localities in El Salvador. A total of 1181 ticks were identified, belonging to ten different species, with various tick-borne pathogens detected. The findings suggest a diverse tick fauna and the potential for tick-borne diseases in El Salvador.

Summary: Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis is the second most prevalent tick-borne disease in the Americas, mainly affecting males aged 18-64 with a history of tick exposure. Clinical features include fever, eschar, rash, headache, and myalgia, while laboratory parameters often show abnormalities with most cases requiring tetracyclines-class antibiotics and only a small percentage needing hospitalization, all cases demonstrating full clinical recovery.
