5'/3' RACE method for sequencing the 5' and 3' untranslated regions of Zika virus

Diego Alejandro Alvarez-Diaz et al.

Summary: The transmission of Zika virus from Africa to the Americas has led to its molecular evolution through mutations in its RNA genome. However, the incomplete 5' and 3' UTR sequences in most of the ZIKV genome sequences reflect the limitations of whole-genome sequencing technologies. A modified RACE protocol was used to determine the complete sequences of the 5' and 3' UTRs of a previously reported ZIKV isolate. This strategy is valuable for determining UTR sequences of ZIKV isolates and for comparative genomics applications.

Zika virus vertical transmission in interferon receptor1-antagonized Rag1-/- mice results in postnatal brain abnormalities and clinical disease

Clayton W. Winkler et al.

Summary: This study used a mouse model to investigate the impact of vertically transmitted ZIKV infection on neonatal survival and brain development. Modulation of infection dose and treatment frequency extended neonatal survival, leading to chronic ZIKV infection in the brain and structural abnormalities and cell death in multiple brain regions.
