Electrochemical NO reduction to NH3 on Cu single atom catalyst

Kai Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, single-atomic copper anchored on molybdenum disulfide (Cu-1/MoS2) was found to be a highly efficient catalyst for electrochemical reduction of NO to NH3. Cu-1/MoS2 exhibited an NH3 yield rate of 337.5 mu mol.h(-1).cm(-2) with a Faradaic efficiency of 90.6% at -0.6 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Experimental and theoretical results revealed that Cu-1-S-3 motifs enable effective activation and hydrogenation of NO, as well as retard proton coverage, leading to high activity and selectivity for NORR.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
