Maternal Exposure to PM2.5 and the Risk of Congenital Heart Defects in 1.4 Million Births: A Nationwide Surveillance-Based Study

Xuelian Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between maternal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and fetal congenital heart defects (CHDs) in China. The results showed that higher maternal PM2.5 exposure, especially during the preconception period, increased the risk of certain types of CHDs in offspring. The findings highlight the importance of improving air quality in China and other highly polluted regions for CHD prevention.

Ozone pollution and hospital admissions for cardiovascular events

Yunxing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examined the potential acute effects of exposure to ambient ozone pollution on hospital admissions of cardiovascular events in China. The results showed that high ambient ozone concentrations were associated with increased hospital admission risk for cardiovascular events, including coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, stroke, and ischemic stroke. These findings provide evidence for the harmful cardiovascular effects of ambient ozone pollution and highlight the need for control measures.

The association between maternal air pollution exposure and the incidence of congenital heart diseases in children: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Xiaoyu Wan et al.

Summary: Previous studies on the association between maternal exposure to ambient air pollution and congenital anomalies in newborns have yielded ambiguous results. To address this knowledge gap, a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature were conducted. Our findings highlight potential evidence for the association between maternal air pollution exposure and congenital heart diseases.

Current status and challenges in prenatal and neonatal screening, diagnosis, and management of congenital heart disease in China

Yingying Zhang et al.

Summary: In this series of papers, the burden of congenital heart disease (CHD) in China is described, along with the development of screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up strategies, and the associated challenges. Solutions and recommendations are proposed to improve the outcomes of CHD. Despite progress in prenatal and neonatal screening, diagnosis, and management of CHD in China, challenges remain such as insufficient diagnostic capabilities and unqualified consultation services in some regions and rural areas.

Maternal exposure to air pollution and congenital heart diseases in Henan, China: A register-based case-control study

Huanhuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In Henan, China, exposure to CO in the first and second trimester was associated with an increased risk of overall CHDs. Additionally, NO2 and CO in the first trimester, PM2.5 and PM10 in the second trimester were linked to a higher risk of ASD, with susceptible windows occurring mainly in the 1st-6th gestational weeks. No positive association was found between air pollution and tetralogy of Fallot.

Tracking PM2.5 and O3 Pollution and the Related Health Burden in China 2013-2020

Qingyang Xiao et al.

Summary: Based on exposure data sets, this study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in PM2.5 and O3 exposures during 2013-2020, finding a decrease in national PM2.5 exposure but worsened O3 pollution. The improved air quality led to a reduction in premature deaths related to both long- and short-term exposures compared to 2013, with a greater reduction in long-term exposure-related deaths observed in 2017-2020 due to the nonlinear exposure-response curve. Efforts are needed for coordinated control of PM2.5 and O3 for future air quality improvements.

Evaluation of IMERG and ERA5 precipitation products over the Mongolian Plateau

Ying Xin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of precipitation datasets over the Mongolian Plateau and found that they can broadly capture seasonal precipitation cycles and spatial patterns. However, there are still some deficiencies, such as overestimating weak precipitation and underestimating high-intensity precipitation. Among the datasets, ERA5-Land performed the best in describing daily precipitation. In addition, IMERG showed poor detection capabilities in forests due to topographic complexity.

Association between gestational exposure and risk of congenital heart disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Zhao Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that, except for CO and SO2, the association between air pollutants and congenital heart disease was not significant. In subtype analysis, a positive association between air pollutants and ventricular septal defect (VSD) was identified, while a negative association with atrial septal defect (ASD) was observed. The source of heterogeneity in the study mainly came from study area and exposure time.
