FTIR spectroscopy as a convenient tool for detection and identification of airborne Cr(VI) compounds arising from arc welding fumes

Vishal Vats et al.

Summary: This paper presents FTIR data on arc welding fumes collected from MMA, FCAW, and MIG/MAG processes, revealing the presence of clear spectra corresponding to Na, K, and dichromates, as well as chromate species and chromium trioxide. These compounds, identified through their characteristic vibrational frequencies, were found to be volatile nanoparticles that could potentially harm welders. The presence of crystalline phases (Fe-Mn spinels) was also confirmed using powder XRD, which matched ion chromatography estimates for Cr(VI).

Welding fume nanoparticles from solid and flux-cored wires: Solubility, toxicity, and role of fluorides

Y. S. Hedberg et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of fluorides added to flux-cored wire electrodes on the solubility and toxicity of welding fume particles. Results showed that welding fume particles containing NaF released higher amounts of Cr(VI) and exhibited increased cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in-vitro. The presence of NaF did not directly affect the solubility of Cr(VI) in welding fumes, but possibly played an indirect role in reducing Mn release and Cr(VI) release from solid wire fume particles.
