Adhesive Wear Failures

Bojan Podgornik

Summary: Friction and wear play a crucial role in the operation and efficiency of components and mechanical systems. Adhesive wear, one of the most serious types of wear, results in high friction coefficients and severe damage to contacting surfaces. This article explores the mechanism and failure modes of adhesive wear, along with standardized tests used to evaluate it. The article also discusses factors preventing adhesive wear and provides information on material-related adhesive wear.

Adhesive transfer operates during galling

Samuel R. Rogers et al.

Summary: Research and development of wear-resistant steels is being carried out to reduce cobalt within the primary circuit of PWR's. The focus is on understanding galling mechanisms, particularly prevalent in PWR valves. Findings show that large shear stresses and adhesive transfer occur during galling due to the difference in manganese content between 304L and 316L stainless steels, even at relatively low compressive stresses of 50MPa.

Measurement of friction in galling testing-An example of its use in characterising the galling behaviour of hardfacings at ambient and elevated temperature

J. L. Daure et al.

Summary: Galling is a severe adhesive wear characterized by surface damage and protrusions. Recognition of galling is subjective, and understanding the behavior of materials under different conditions requires further research.
