Multi-source satellite reveals the heterogeneity in water storage change over northwestern China in recent decades

Qing Liu et al.

Summary: The northwestern China generally suffers from severe water shortages. This study explored the distribution and variation of water storage in the region from 2002 to 2018, using satellite data. The results showed an increase in surface water area and a decrease in terrestrial water storage and groundwater storage. The differences in variation between northern and southern regions were attributed to regional precipitation and temperature variations.

Applications and Challenges of GRACE and GRACE Follow-On Satellite Gravimetry

Jianli Chen et al.

Summary: Time-variable gravity measurements from GRACE and GRACE-FO missions have enabled the study of mass redistribution and transport in the Earth system. These measurements have been widely used to understand mass variations in different components of the Earth system and have improved our understanding of climate system variability. This comprehensive review discusses the major applications of GRACE/GRACE-FO measurements in various fields and the challenges faced in studying mass changes. The extended record of gravity series is expected to lead to a broader range of applications and enhance our understanding of climate change and the Earth system.

Human Intervention Will Stabilize Groundwater Storage Across the North China Plain

Wenting Yang et al.

Summary: The North China Plain has experienced groundwater overexploitation due to rapid socio-economic development and irrigation demand. The operation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has provided an opportunity to sustain groundwater resources. This study used a high-resolution model to simulate and project groundwater storage in the region, and found that water diversion and reductions in water use could increase groundwater storage.

Variations in lake water storage over Inner Mongolia during recent three decades based on multi-mission satellites

Yuyue Xu et al.

Summary: Lake shrinkage in Inner Mongolia, a common problem in arid and semi-arid regions, has been analyzed using multi-mission satellite data. The study reveals that human activities, such as coal mining, agricultural irrigation, and grazing, are the main drivers of lake shrinkage, while natural factors have a secondary influence.

Climate change threatens terrestrial water storage over the Tibetan Plateau

Xueying Li et al.

Summary: The Tibetan Plateau, as a major freshwater source for Asia, is experiencing significant net loss in terrestrial water storage, especially in the Amu Darya and Indus basins. Factors such as glacier retreat, lake expansion, and subsurface water loss contribute to this trend. The projected decline in water-supply capacity poses a critical water resource threat to these regions.

Divergent Changes in Terrestrial Water Storage Across Global Arid and Humid Basins

Baoyi Hu et al.

Summary: By combining satellite remote sensing data, we studied water storage changes in 197 global river basins and found that arid basins show small annual or multiyear changes, while humid basins exhibit larger fluctuations. Changes in soil moisture have a greater impact on increment S in arid basins, while the contribution of groundwater storage changes is less relevant in humid basins.

Long-Term (1979-Present) Total Water Storage Anomalies Over the Global Land Derived by Reconstructing GRACE Data

Fupeng Li et al.

Summary: The study combines machine learning with statistical decomposition techniques to reconstruct global long-term TWSA fields from 1979 to 2020, showing a good fit with GRACE-FO observations and successfully reproducing strong El Nino signals. Comparisons with Satellite Laser Ranging solutions and observed global mean sea level changes suggest the reconstruction is more reliable than previously published products, providing a viable approach for both past TWSA reconstruction and filling the GRACE data gap at a global scale.

Optimizing GRACE/GRACE-FO data and a priori hydrological knowledge for improved global terrestial water storage component estimates

Natthachet Tangdamrongsub et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the feasibility of estimating Delta TWS components at desired spatial-vertical resolutions by maintaining the native resolution of hydrological knowledge. The LSC approach incorporating GRACE and GRACE-FO data and prior hydrological knowledge aims to improve the accuracy and spatial resolution of global Delta TWS components. The disaggregation of GRACE mascon derived TWS data into different components shows significantly improved accuracy, particularly in Delta GWS and Delta SWS, with globally averaged correlation values increasing by approximately 0.13 and 0.05, respectively.

Variations of groundwater storage in different basins of China over recent decades

Zijun Yin et al.

Summary: Groundwater is crucial for agriculture, industry, and daily life, and understanding the variations of groundwater storage (GWS) in different regions of China is essential for water resource management. This study utilized GRACE satellite data to analyze GWS trends in 10 major basins in China, showing both decreasing and increasing trends across different regions influenced by climate and human activities. The findings provide valuable insights for groundwater resource management and conservation efforts in China.
