Toward Energy Neutrality: Novel Wastewater Treatment Incorporating Acidophilic Ammonia Oxidation

Zhetai Hu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel wastewater treatment scheme that combines chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT), partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A), and anaerobic digestion (AD) to achieve energy-neutral wastewater treatment. By adding FeCl3 to the CEPT process, high removal rates of COD and phosphate were achieved, and alkalinity was reduced. Stable accumulation of nitrite was achieved in an aerobic reactor using a novel acid-tolerant ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), Candidatus Nitrosoglobus. After polishing in an anoxic reactor (anammox), satisfactory effluent quality was obtained. The integrated system demonstrated stable performance and could achieve energy self-sufficiency.

Reducing sulfide and methane production in gravity sewer sediments through urine separation, collection and intermittent dosing

Zhiqiang Zuo et al.

Summary: This study presents an alternative solution to reduce sulfide and methane production in sewer sediments by integrating urine source separation, rapid storage, and intermittent dosing into a sewer. The experimental results showed that the proposed urine dosing effectively reduced sulfide and methane production, and also had economic and environmental advantages compared to conventional chemical methods.

Enhancing sulfide mitigation via the sustainable supply of oxygen from air-nanobubbles in gravity sewers

Zhiqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: A new method of air-nanobubble (ANB) injection was proposed for sulfide control in gravity sewers, with results showing higher efficiency compared to traditional air injection method. The reduction of sulfide by ANB injection includes both inhibition of sulfide production and oxidation of dissolved sulfide, as confirmed by microbial community analysis.

FeS-mediated mobilization and immobilization of Cr(III) in oxic aquatic systems

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that FeS nanoparticles facilitated rapid Fenton-like reactions during the early stage of FeS oxygenation, leading to the rapid oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI). However, as the reactions progressed, the oxidative potential was counteracted by competitive scavenging and reduction reactions. In equilibrium, all Cr(VI) was reduced back to Cr(III) at an FeS-Cr(III) molar ratio of 10:1, while a small fraction of Cr(VI) remained in solid products at a ratio of 1:1. Acidic conditions favored the generation of Cr(VI) and the equilibrium concentration was higher at pH 5.0 compared to pH 9.0.

Free Radicals Produced from the Oxidation of Ferrous Sulfides Promote the Remobilization of Cadmium in Paddy Soils During Drainage

Hui Huang et al.

Summary: Oxidation of FeS in soils produces hydroxyl free radicals that promote the oxidative dissolution of CdS and increase Cd mobilization. Although FeS and CdS can form a within-sulfide voltaic cell, the free radical effect is more significant and short-lived.

Summary: The study found that dosing ferric chloride can reduce environmental impacts in high H2S situations, while in medium H2S situations it leads to a deterioration of human toxicity and freshwater ecotoxicity. In low H2S situations, dosing ferric chloride has a greater negative impact on the environment.

Rapid dynamic quantification of sulfide generation flux in spatially heterogeneous sediments of gravity sewers

Zhiqiang Zuo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel quantitative approach for rapidly estimating the sulfide generation flux in gravity sewers, taking into account the significant anaerobic/aerobic spatial variations. The dynamic aeration-related process stimulated the growth of sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in the surface zone, while the sulfidogenic and methanogenic zone moved into deeper layers. A detailed mechanism model is developed to predict sulfide production and microbial communities in sediments, providing a rapid quantitative approach for estimating different sulfide generation fluxes under various sewer factors.

In Situ Exploration of the Sulfidogenic Process at the Water-Sediment Interface in Sewers: Mechanism and Implications

Zhiqiang Zuo et al.

Summary: This study focuses on sulfidogenic conversion at the water-sediment interface to optimize sulfide prediction and control in sewers. A novel in situ measurement method was established, showing that substrate diffusion resistance controls sulfidogenic activity at the surface layer of sediment at critical shear velocities.
