Source apportionment of serum PFASs in two highly exposed communities

Dylan J. Wallis et al.

Summary: Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals widely present in the environment and biological systems, including human serum, and are associated with various health effects. This study assessed the effectiveness of three source apportionment methods in identifying contributors to PFAS concentrations in highly exposed populations, and found that these methods successfully identified potential exposure sources. Future research should focus on expanding the PFAS panel, identifying cohorts with different point source exposures, and combining biological and environmental data for better understanding of source apportionment results.

Long-Term Trends of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Suspended Particular Matter from German Rivers Using the Direct Total Oxidizable Precursor (dTOP) Assay

Bernd Goeckener et al.

Summary: Retrospective investigation of suspended particulate matter (SPM) from 13 riverine sampling sites in the German Environmental Specimen Bank collected between 2005 and 2019 revealed the presence of substantial amounts of unknown per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) precursors. Conventional target analysis overestimated actual PFAS concentration decreases, highlighting the importance of considering precursors in environmental assessments. The dTOP assay proved to be a suitable tool for detecting unknown PFAS precursors in the samples.

Source apportionment and crop bioaccumulation of perfluoroalkyl acids and novel alternatives in an industrial-intensive region with fluorochemical production, China: Health implications for human exposure

Zhaoyang Liu et al.

Summary: In an industrial-intensive region of China, research showed that short-chained PFAAs and novel alternatives have gradually become the dominant components in soils and crops, with fluoropolymer manufacturing and textile treatment identified as the principal sources. The bioaccumulation factors of PFAAs and alternatives in crops were negatively correlated with carbon chain length, and were also associated with soil organic matter and crop species. Through crop consumption, these compounds may pose emerging health threats to humans.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the environment

Marina G. Evich et al.

Summary: PFAS has become a symbol of environmental contamination, attracting public, scientific, and regulatory concern. These compounds are globally distributed through atmospheric and aqueous releases, and they accumulate in biota through multiple pathways. Efforts to remediate PFAS-contaminated matrices are still in their early stages, with a focus on research targeting drinking water.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as anthropogenic organic pollutants, are widely distributed in the aquatic environment and have adverse effects on human health and ecology. This review critically evaluates the global occurrence and distribution of PFAS in water and discusses the evolving regulatory responses to mitigate the risks associated with PFAS. The study highlights the need for international cooperation in managing PFAS contamination.

The driving factors of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substance (PFAS) accumulation in selected fish species: The influence of position in river continuum, fish feed composition, and pollutant properties

Jaroslav Semerad et al.

Summary: This study assessed the geographical trends of fish contamination by per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in the Czech section of the Elbe River and its tributary. Long chain PFASs were found in higher concentrations, while short-chain PFASs and Gen-X were detected in lower quantities. The study also revealed that PFAS concentrations increased downstream and were positively correlated with δ N-15 and negatively correlated with δ C-13. Additionally, molecular mass and the number of fluorine substituents were found to play crucial roles in PFAS bioaccumulation.

Technology-critical elements in Rhine sediments - A case study on occurrence and spatial distribution

Ole Klein et al.

Summary: Despite their presence in almost every technical device, little is known about the occurrence, distribution, and fate of technology-critical elements (TCEs) within the environment. In this study, sediment samples from the German part of the Rhine river were collected to study the occurrence and distribution of TCEs. The results suggest possible enrichment of TCEs along the Rhine, with atmospheric deposition and anthropogenic inputs being potential sources. TCEs exhibit similar behavior to classical heavy metals.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in river discharge: Modeling loads upstream and downstream of a PFAS manufacturing plant in the Cape Fear watershed, North Carolina

M-A Petre et al.

Summary: This study quantified PFAS concentrations and loads in Cape Fear River in North Carolina. The results showed that perfluoroalkyl acids dominated the upstream while fluoroethers associated with a manufacturing plant accounted for about 47% of the detected PFAS downstream. The average concentration of 43 PFAS near Wilmington was 143 ng/L, with 17-88% originating from the PFAS plant. Despite the cessation of PFAS process wastewater discharge, significant amounts of fluoroethers and legacy PFAS continue to enter the river, posing potential exposure risks to up to 1.5 million people in the watershed.

Wenbin Chen et al.

Summary: This study conducted a large-scale investigation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in 44 wastewater treatment plants in Shaanxi Province, China. The results showed that these plants are major sinks for PFASs, but they also act as secondary point sources, releasing PFASs into the environment. The study also found that the composition profiles of PFASs differed between wastewater and sludge samples, and the removal efficiency varied for different chain lengths of PFASs.

Remediation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated soils - To mobilize or to immobilize or to degrade?

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities, with major sources being firefighting foam, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soils is challenging due to their stability and mixture complexity. Mobilizing amendments increase PFAS mobility and bioavailability, while immobilizing amendments decrease transfer to food chain and leaching to water sources. Future research should focus on quantifying potential leaching of mobilized PFAS and monitoring long-term stability of immobilized PFAS.

Summary: This review article compiled peer-reviewed literature on the effects of PFAS exposure on reproduction in animals and humans. Long-chain PFAS compounds, known for their persistence and bioaccumulation, are being replaced globally, while less is known about the short-chain replacements which are more mobile and persistent in aquatic ecosystems. The potential reproductive risks of PFAS exposure remain a concern, with more research needed on the effects of short-chain PFAS on reproductive health.
