Interfacial electronic coupling in Mn3O4/C@FeOOH nano-octahedrals regulates intermediate adsorption for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Hongmei Tang et al.

Summary: This study presents a hierarchical nanostructure of manganese oxide/carbon@iron oxyhydroxide (Mn3O4/C@FeOOH) as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. By optimizing the structure and composition of the electrocatalyst, a low overpotential, small Tafel slope, and good long-term stability were achieved. The superior OER performance of the hybrid Mn3O4/C@FeOOH was attributed to the synergistic effects of the individual components, including the structural support of the amorphous carbon skeleton, enhanced conductivity from uniformly dispersed Mn3O4 and graphite nanoparticles, and partial electron redistribution at the Mn3O4/C and FeOOH interface.

Enhancing charge transfer efficiency of cerium-iron oxides via Co regulated oxygen vacancies to boost peroxymonosulfate activation for tetracycline degradation

Zihan Qian et al.

Summary: Enhancing charge transfer efficiency and accelerating the redox cycle improve catalysts' ability to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The cobalt regulated cerium-iron oxides (CFOCo) successfully achieved this by reducing particle size, increasing oxygen vacancies, and generating more reactive oxygen species (ROS). CFO-Co exhibited significantly boosted PMS activation and excellent catalytic performance in various conditions, as well as easy catalyst recovery. The introduction of cobalt reduced PMS adsorption energy on the catalyst and promoted ROS production. This work provides a new perspective on the design of PMS-activated catalysts.

Controllable synthesis of substitutional and interstitial nitrogen-doped ceria: The effects of doping sites on enhanced catalytic ozonation of organic pollutants

Shujuan Zhan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant effects of nitrogen doping sites on the catalytic ozonation of CeO2. Nitrogen selectively doped at substitutional or interstitial sites greatly enhances the elimination of sulfamethoxazole, with interstitial nitrogen (Ni) being more effective. The formation of oxygen vacancies (OVs) is favored by Ni, and both Ni and OVs contribute to the improved reactivity of ozone activation.

Dan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, carbon encapsulated Fe3N nanospheres grown on N-doped porous carbon nanosheet were successfully prepared using a green, facile, and controllable method. Only a small nitrogen source was required for the in-situ nitrogenization process. The Fe3N nanospheres were coated by carbon and uniformly adhered to Ndoped porous carbon nanosheet, resulting in reduced volume variation and enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics. This feature contributes to a long life and excellent rate performance. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries, it exhibited a high discharge capacity of 484 mA h g-1 after 600 cycles at 2 A g-1. This study has significant impact on the preparation and application of metal nitride materials.

Evaluation of the role of superoxide radical as chain carrier for the formation of hydroxyl radical during ozonation

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: Superoxide radicals (O-2(center dot-)) are important chain carriers in the radical chain reaction during ozonation, promoting the decomposition of ozone (O-3) to hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot). This study used a probe compound and kinetic modeling to evaluate the role of O-2(center dot-) for O-3 decomposition during ozonation of synthetic solutions and natural waters. The results showed that O-2(center dot-) plays a critical role in promoting O-3 decomposition, with its contribution ranging from 45-70% depending on water composition.
