Prolonged lifetime of biological activated carbon filters through enhanced biodegradation of melamine

Laura Piai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of removing micropollutants through biodegradation in BAC filters under favorable conditions, in addition to adsorption. Inoculation of melamine degrading biomass significantly increased the removal efficiency, and the provision of an additional carbon source almost completely removed melamine. Moreover, around 60% of the previously adsorbed melamine desorbed from the BAC surface when biodegradation rates in the liquid phase increased, resulting in partial recovery of the adsorption capacity.

Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

John L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Photodegradation of propranolol in surface waters: An important role of carbonate radical and enhancing toxicity phenomenon

Yuchen Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical fate of the antihypertensive drug propranolol in surface water, including its kinetics, products, and toxicity. The presence of dissolved organic matter, nitrate, and bicarbonate in the water enhanced the photodegradation of propranolol. The reaction between propranolol and bicarbonate generated carbonate radicals, which promoted the photodegradation. Several photodegradation products were identified in the water, and their presence increased the toxicity evaluated by Vibrio fischeri.

Meta-analysis of the removal of trace organic contaminants from constructed wetlands: Conditions, parameters, and mechanisms

Jun Yan et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands are a promising technique for mitigating trace organic contaminants. This review used meta-analysis to explore the removal of these contaminants in constructed wetlands and identified factors such as solid-water distribution coefficient, pH, and dissolved oxygen that influence their removal. The results suggest that a single factor cannot determine the fate of trace organic contaminants in constructed wetlands, and future research should focus on reducing scale bias.

Silvia Venditti et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficiency of different substrates in removing emerging contaminants from wastewater using Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands (VFCWs). The laboratory investigation showed that VFCWs could provide excellent effluent quality, with overall removal efficiencies exceeding 90% in most cases. Substrate type played a role in the removal of compounds with medium elimination. Under real conditions, VFCWs with 15% activated biochar mixed with sand were effective in removing 18 emerging contaminants and meeting national discharge standards for 4 selected compounds.
