Sulphate reduction determines the long-term effect of iron amendments on phosphorus retention in lake sediments

Lena Heinrich et al.

Summary: This field study aimed to investigate the long-term fate of iron added to two urban lakes in Berlin, Germany, and evaluate the contributions of iron dosing to improve lake status. The study found that the addition of iron led to increased phosphorus retention in one lake while causing sulphur retention in the other due to varying sulphate reduction rates. Management interventions involving iron amendments to enhance phosphorus retention should consider the competing process of iron sulphide formation.

Influence of temperature and pH on phosphate removal efficiency of different sorbents used in lake restoration

Li Kang et al.

Summary: This study tested three commercially available phosphorus sorbents (LMB, AMZ, and Al) on their capacity to chemically inactivate soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) under different temperatures and pH values. The results showed that temperature and pH had different effects on the SRP binding behavior of each sorbent, indicating the importance of considering these factors in lake restoration.

Towards climate-robust water quality management: Testing the efficacy of different eutrophication control measures during a heatwave in an urban canal

Qing Zhan et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms are a result of eutrophication, and their presence leads to a decline in water quality and ecosystem services. Extreme climate events can worsen eutrophication, making it more difficult to reduce nutrient loads through restoration efforts. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration measures under climate change for effective water management. In a two-month experiment conducted in a hypertrophic urban canal, the efficacy of four interventions in reducing sediment phosphorus release was tested. Dredging and lanthanum modified bentonite were found to be the most effective in reducing phytoplankton and cyanobacteria biomass, while aeration had no effect. However, an extreme heatwave negatively impacted the measures, increasing nutrient releases and causing a decline in water clarity. This suggests that current restoration measures may face challenges in the future with more frequent and intense heatwaves.

Effectiveness of phosphorus control under extreme heatwaves: implications for sediment nutrient releases and greenhouse gas emissions

Qing Zhan et al.

Summary: Eutrophication is a key factor leading to water quality deterioration in inland waters globally, and extreme heatwave events can potentially hinder efforts to control it by affecting nutrient abatement techniques and biogeochemical processes. The study found that exposure to extreme heatwaves compromised the effectiveness of lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) in reducing nutrients, leading to increased phosphorus concentration and altered nitrogen cycling, as well as elevated greenhouse gas emissions. The findings suggest that under future climate scenarios with more frequent and intense extreme events, current eutrophication control efforts will face greater challenges.

Contrasting effects and mode of dredging and in situ adsorbent amendment for the control of sediment internal phosphorus loading in eutrophic lakes

Hongbin Yin et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) addition and dredging on controlling sediment phosphorus (P) loading in eutrophic water bodies. The results showed that LMB addition was more effective in reducing sediment P fluxes and pore water P concentrations compared to dredging in the long term.

The efficacy of Phoslock® in reducing internal phosphate loading varies with bottom water oxygenation

Mary A. Zeller et al.

Summary: The study found that Phoslock(R) can effectively reduce phosphate flux under anoxic conditions, but showed no significant advantage over untreated sediment in oxygenated conditions. Additionally, the application of Phoslock(R) may lead to a pulse increase in NH4+ concentrations in the water column.
