Graphene shell-encapsulated copper-based nanoparticles (G@Cu-NPs) effectively activate peracetic acid for elimination of sulfamethazine in water under neutral condition

Junyang Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene shell-encapsulated copper-based nanoparticles (G@Cu-NPs) were prepared for peracetic acid (PAA) activation, leading to efficient removal of sulfamethazine (SMT). The graphene shells facilitated electron transfer and generated organic radicals and hydroxyl radicals, which played a crucial role in removing SMT. The research also proposed possible degradation pathways and mechanisms, and predicted the toxicity of SMT and its intermediates. The effects of key parameters, common anions, and humic acid on the removal of SMT were investigated. The G@Cu-NPs/PAA system showed promising adaptability, reusability, and stability in treating different water bodies.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Triggers Peracetic Acid Activation for Robust Removal of Micropollutants: The Role of Electron Transfer

Dezhen Kong et al.

Summary: This study explores the usage of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for activating peracetic acid (PAA) via a non-radical pathway. The rGO-PAA system exhibits near-complete removal of micropollutants (MPs) within a short time and shows robust removal of multiple MPs under complex water matrices and with low toxicity. The study also establishes a heatmap model based on electrostatic interaction for regulating the performance of the PAA oxidation system.

Peracetic Acid Enhances Micropollutant Degradation by Ferrate(VI) through Promotion of Electron Transfer Efficiency

Junyue Wang et al.

Summary: Ferrate(VI) and peracetic acid (PAA) are two oxidants that have been found to degrade micropollutants more efficiently when applied together. This study investigated the mechanisms behind this enhanced degradation and found that Fe(IV)/Fe(V) species were the main reactive agents, while organic radicals had little contribution. The study also revealed that PAA is not an activator for Ferrate(VI), but can enhance the oxidation capacity of Fe(IV)/Fe(V), leading to increased efficiency in wastewater treatment.

Interaction of peracetic acid with chromium(III): Understanding degradation of coexisting organic pollutants in water

Joshua Bell et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of the interaction between peracetic acid (PAA) and chromium(III) (Cr(III)) on the degradation of pharmaceuticals. It is found that PAA-Cr(III) shows a higher degradation rate of pharmaceuticals compared to PAA and H2O2-Cr(III) under alkaline conditions. Spectroscopic measurements suggest (OH)-O-center dot as the major radical species and Cr(IV)/Cr(V) as additional reactive species. The presence of co-present metal ions may play a significant role in PAA oxidation in water treatment.

Applying a novel advanced oxidation process of activated peracetic acid by CoFe2O4 to efficiently degrade sulfamethoxazole

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, peracetic acid (PAA) was successfully activated by cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4/PAA) to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The best removal efficiency of SMX was achieved under neutral conditions with 200 μM PAA and 0.1 g/L CoFe2O4. The redox cycle of Co3+/ Co2+ on the CoFe2O4 surface dominated PAA activation, producing organic radicals that accounted for SMX degradation. The potential applicability of the CoFe2O4/PAA system in degrading micro-organic pollutants was suggested based on the results of this study.

Longlong Zhang et al.

Summary: The novel Co@MXenes catalyst showed superior performance for activating PAA in water decontamination, mainly due to the = Co(III)/= Co(II) cycle triggered by the Ti3C2Tx MXene substrate, leading to enhanced PAA activation. The catalyst exhibited high stability, low cobalt ion leaching, and high reusability, making it a promising catalyst for PAA activation in wastewater treatment.

HCO3-/CO32- enhanced degradation of diclofenac by Cu(II)-activated peracetic acid: Efficiency and mechanism

Zhenran Wang et al.

Summary: Cu(II)/peracetic acid system efficiently removes DCF in the presence of bicarbonate and carbonate, with the concentration ratio of HCO3- to CO32- significantly affecting DCF removal. Organic radicals were identified as the main factor responsible for DCF degradation. Optimization of operational parameters and investigation of common water matrix effects allowed for the proposal of five probable degradation pathways of DCF.

Insights into the oxidation of organic contaminants by Co(II) activated peracetic acid: The overlooked role of high-valent cobalt-oxo species

Banghai Liu et al.

Summary: The combination of Co(II) and PAA can generate Co(IV) under acidic conditions, with the oxidation mechanism being strongly influenced by solution pH. The presence of H2O2 competes with Co(IV) and reactive radicals, leading to a decline in catalytic performance. Co(IV) reacts readily with organic substances bearing electron-rich groups, reducing their biological toxicity.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2): A novel activator of peracetic acid for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel advanced oxidation process using MoS2/PAA was applied to degrade sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the target SA. Results showed that under optimum pH conditions, the degradation efficiency of SMX exceeded 80% after 15 minutes of reaction. Increasing the dosages of PAA or MoS2 facilitated SMX degradation, while the presence of humic acids slowed down the removal of SMX.
