The capture technology matters: Composition of municipal wastewater solids drives complexity of microbial community structure and volatile fatty acid profile during anaerobic fermentation

Antoine Brison et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different organic substrate capture technologies and thermal alkaline pre-treatment on the composition of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced during fermentation. The results show that the choice of capture technology determines the composition of the produced solids, which in turn affects the complexity of the microbial community and VFA composition in the fermenter. Solids captured with the primary settler or micro-sieve consist primarily of polysaccharides, leading to a relatively simple VFA composition. In contrast, solids from the HRAS system contain more protein and result in a more complex VFA composition. Thermal alkaline pre-treatment does not significantly affect VFA composition.

Niche differentiation drives microbial community assembly and succession in full-scale activated sludge bioreactors

Miguel de Celis et al.

Summary: Network models and community phylogenetic analyses were used to examine the temporal dynamics of network properties in microbial communities in activated sludge systems. The results showed that during the initial assembly stages, the microbial communities adapted to the activated sludge environment, leading to an increase in network modularity and co-exclusion proportion, and a decrease in network clustering. This suggests niche specialization as a result of the selective pressure of deterministic factors in wastewater treatment plants.

Pilot-scale hydrolysis of primary sludge for production of easily degradable carbon to treat biological wastewater or produce biogas

Morten Lykkegaard Christensen et al.

Summary: This article describes a wastewater treatment plant designed to focus equally on energy production, water quality, and reduced emissions of greenhouse gases. The plant utilizes a disk filter to remove carbon during primary treatment, followed by hydrolysis and centrifugation to produce a hydrolysate centrate that can be used for secondary wastewater treatment or biogas production.

Full-scale aerobic granular sludge for municipal wastewater treatment - granule formation, microbial succession, and process performance

Jennifer Ekholm et al.

Summary: This study assessed the implementation of AGS process in Nordic countries and found rapid changes in microbial community composition during start-up and factors affecting granulation. The results showed that immigration from influent wastewater had a minor impact on microbial community after granules formation, while seasonal environmental factors were identified as important for AGS performance.

Response of VFAs and microbial interspecific interaction to primary sludge fermentation temperature

Xiao Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that temperature plays a crucial role in the succession and interspecific interaction of microorganisms in primary sludge anaerobic fermentation system, affecting the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Higher temperatures promote the production of acetic and iso-valeric acid, and there are metabolic differences among microorganisms at different temperatures.

Biological nutrient removal enhancement using fermented primary and rotating belt filter biosolids

Gholamreza Bahreini et al.

Summary: This research compared the impact of primary clarification and rotating belt filtration on biological nutrients removal processes, finding that SFL can effectively enhance BNR. The study also showed that the addition of SFL significantly increased the removal efficiency of reactors, with stable nutrient concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the effluent.
