Identifying the evolution of primary oxidation mechanisms and pollutant degradation routes in the electro-cocatalytic Fenton-like systems

Xianhu Long et al.

Summary: In this study, sustainable Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles in different inorganic peroxides activation systems were accelerated by using electro-catalysis (EC) as the electron donor. The electro-cocatalytic Fenton-like systems exhibited excellent degradation efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Various reactive oxygen species (ROS) including hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot), singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), and sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) were produced in EC/Fe(III)/PMS system, contributing to 38%, 37%, and 24% respectively. The dominant ROS in EC/Fe(III)/ PDS and EC/Fe(III)/HP processes was (OH)-O-center dot. The study provides a strong basis for constructing suitable systems to achieve different treatment requirements.

Efficient activation of ferrate(VI) by colloid manganese dioxide: Comprehensive elucidation of the surface-promoted mechanism

Mengfan Luo et al.

Summary: Current research is focused on enhancing the oxidation activity of ferrate (Fe(VI)) by introducing additional energy or reducing agents. Interestingly, colloid manganese dioxide (cMnO(2)) is found to promote Fe(VI) removal of various contaminants through a surface-promoted pathway. The study suggests that high-valent Fe species are the main oxidants in the cMnO2-Fe(VI) system, and Fe(VI) can combine with vacancies in cMnO(2) to generate Fe(IV)/Fe(V). The decay products of Fe(VI) play a vital role in further enhancing the formation of Fe(IV) and Fe(V). Furthermore, cMnO(2) shows superior catalytic stability in complex waters, making it a promising reductant for Fe(VI) activation.

Understanding the Importance of Periodate Species in the pH-Dependent Degradation of Organic Contaminants in the H2O2/Periodate Process

Tiansheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of pH on the decontamination performance of the H2O2/periodate process, with a focus on the role of H4IO6-. The results show that increasing pH accelerates the decay rates of organic contaminants but decreases their removal amounts. HO center dot is found to be the major reactive oxidizing species in the process under all tested pH levels, and H4IO6- and H2I2O104- are identified as the precursors of HO center dot.
