Comparison of SDS and L-Methionine in promoting CO2 hydrate kinetics: Implication for hydrate-based CO2 storage

Xuejian Liu et al.

Summary: The continuously increasing CO2 emissions since industrialization has sparked widespread concerns on environmental and climate change issues. This study compared the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and L-methionine ((L)-Met) on CO2 hydrate formation kinetics, and found that (L)-Met is a more effective and eco-friendly kinetic promoter than SDS. The experimental results and hydrate morphology observations provided possible explanations for the observed kinetics. A novel calculation method was developed to quantify the partition of CO2 in different phases. The reusability of (L)-Met as a CO2 hydrate kinetic promoter was also demonstrated. This study highlights the importance of finding efficient and eco-friendly technologies for CO2 sequestration.

Influential mechanism of water occurrence states of waste-activated sludge: Potential linkage between water-holding capacity and molecular compositions of EPS

Boran Wu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the variation in molecular compositions of EPS induced by •OH and its effects on the water occurrence states of waste-activated sludge (WAS). The results indicate that hydrophilic functional groups have a greater impact on the water-holding capacity of EPS. It is clarified that selectively removing hydrophilic functional groups is more effective for highly-efficient sludge conditioning approaches than improving •OH production efficiency.

Influential mechanism of water occurrence states of waste-activated sludge: Over-focused significance of cell lysis to bound water reduction

Boran Wu et al.

Summary: The cell membrane structure has a significant influence on the dewatering performance of waste-activated sludge, but there is still debate on the optimal extent of cell lysis. This study used non-chemical methods such as sonication, cyclic freezing-thawing, and DMSO amendment to lyse microbial cells and found that the extent of cell lysis had limited impact on the water occurrence states of the sludge.

Enhancing waste activated sludge dewaterability by reducing interaction energy of sludge flocs

Wenbo Yu et al.

Summary: The study showed that the addition of trivalent cations and Fenton's reagent can improve sludge dewaterability by reducing the energy barrier and repulsive force between sludge flocs, converting hydrophilic surfaces to hydrophobic, and decreasing the Lewis acid-base interaction energy of sludge flocs.

Influential mechanism of water occurrence states of waste-activated sludge: specifically focusing on the roles of EPS micro-spatial distribution and cation-dominated interfacial properties

Boran Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of removing EPS-complexed cations on the spatial distribution of EPS and its influence on particle size distribution, fractal dimension, interfacial free energy, and water occurrence states of WAS. The results confirmed that dispersed EPS adhering layers led to higher fractal dimension but lower space filling degree of bio-flocs.
