ANN-Based Modeling of Combined O3/H2O2 Oxidation, and Activated Carbon Adsorption Treatment System: Forest Polluting Site Leachate

Erfan Nabavi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the efficiency of the combined oxidation and adsorption treatment (COAT) process in treating forest polluting site (FPS) leachate by considering local experiments. The results showed that the COAT process, with oxidation and ozone treatment, had a higher removal efficiency compared to the ozone-GAC process. The interaction effects of operating variables were evaluated and response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networks (ANN) were employed for optimization. The ANN model showed better prediction accuracy compared to RSM. The optimized conditions for the COAT process were determined, and the experimental results demonstrated its proper efficiency in removing TDS, COD, and BOD.

A Novel Biodegradable Magnetically/Recyclable Cellulose-Based Adsorbent: Synthesis, Characterization, and Experimental Design Toward Cd(II) Removal

Parastoo Ghahremani et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the explosive growth of industrial activities has led to severe environmental pollution, mainly from the release of toxic heavy metals. The development of highly effective and biodegradable adsorbents for heavy metal removal has become a significant interest. A novel and eco-friendly adsorbent, Fe3O4-SiO2-Quince seed mucilage (QSM) core-shell magnetic nanohybrid (FSQ), was synthesized and characterized. The adsorbent exhibited a sticky bullet-like morphology with a specific surface area of 2.28 m(2)/g, total pore volume of 0.0076 cm(3)/g, and average pore diameter of 13.3 nm. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to evaluate the simultaneous interactions of influencing variables, and the optimal conditions were determined. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetics were followed, indicating a spontaneous process.

Characterization of Power Ultrasound Modified Kappaphycus alvarezii Biosorbent and its Modeling by Artificial Neural Networks

Sumit Kumar et al.

Summary: This study aimed to prepare a highly efficient biosorbent using seaweed modified by power ultrasound, and optimize the removal of a cationic dye from the aqueous solution using response surface methodology and artificial neural network. The results showed that ultrasound treatment increased the surface area of seaweed and enhanced its adsorption capacity. The Langmuir isotherm model described the best adsorption behavior and showed a higher adsorption capacity compared to activated carbon. Factors such as adsorbent doses, pH, temperature, and dye concentration affected the adsorption capacity. The study demonstrates the potential use of the prepared biosorbent as a green technology for the removal of cationic dye and environmental sustainability.

Characterization of Pine Residues from Himalayan Region and Their Use as Copper Adsorbent

Shivani Tyagi et al.

Summary: The present study characterized pine forest residues and utilized them as adsorbents for Cu(II) removal from synthetic wastewater. The results showed that different residues had different physico-chemical properties, which affected their adsorption capacity and efficiency. This study contributes to the development of new wastewater treatment technologies and resource recycling.

Treatment of aqueous selenocyanate (SeCN-) using combined TiO2 photocatalysis and 2-line ferrihydrite adsorption

Sameh A. A. Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study focused on the treatment of selenocyanate contaminated water using a combination of TiO2 photocatalysis and 2LFh adsorption system. The photocatalysis initiated the degradation of selenocyanate complex while the released selenium species were adsorbed onto 2LFh. The efficiency of the combined system was influenced by process control variables such as pH, with complete selenium removal observed at pH 5.
