Efficacy of Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis for the Treatment of Oil-Field Produced Water Intended for Beneficial Reuse

Nohyeong Jeong et al.

Summary: Treatment and reuse of unconventional oil and gas (UOG) produced water are crucial to addressing water scarcity and pollution issues. This study examined the effectiveness of pretreatment followed by nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) in treating UOG produced water. The results showed that the pretreatment had a minor impact, NF permeates did not meet water quality criteria, and while RO removed most contaminants, some exceeded irrigation guidelines. Thorough analysis is required to understand the feasibility and potential risks of treating UOG produced water for beneficial reuse.

Small particle size activated carbon enhanced flow electrode capacitive deionization desalination performances by reducing the interfacial concentration difference

Junjun Ma et al.

Summary: Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is an effective method for high salinity wastewater desalination. However, limited adsorption capacity of electrode material leads to membrane concentration polarization, increased energy consumption, and discontinuity in desalination. In this study, ball milling technology was used to modify activated carbon (AC), resulting in enhanced salt removal rate and adsorption capacity. The modified surface properties of ball milled activated carbon (BAC), including increased oxygenated functional groups, electrostatic gravitation characteristics, and hydrophilicity, reduced concentration polarization during desalination. The larger electrolyte contact area, enhanced ions capacity, and higher energy normalized removal salt (ENRS) of BAC flow electrode compared to AC contribute to its improved performance. Ball milling technology shows great potential for large-scale modification of electrode materials.

Capacitive deionization characteristics of compressed granular activated carbon

Yoshihiro Nakayama et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the possibility of using granular activated carbon (GAC) for capacitive deionization (CDI) electrodes and found that compressing GAC significantly improved ion removal. The effect of applied voltage on salt adsorption capacity was also studied, showing that the CDI cell with compressed GAC achieved a salt adsorption capacity comparable to other CDIs in previous studies, making it a potential cost-effective desalination technology.

Activated carbon electrode with promising specific capacitance based on potassium bromide redox additive electrolyte for supercapacitor application

Mahmoud Maher et al.

Summary: By introducing Halogenated Bromide (Br -) into the aqueous electrolyte solution, the capacitance features of activated carbon electrodes in electric double-layer supercapacitors were significantly improved. The electrodes with sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and KBr redox additive demonstrated high specific capacitance and excellent stability. In addition, the symmetric supercapacitor cell displayed outstanding electrochemical performance with high specific energy, capacitance, power, and retention capacity after cycles.

Pollution control of wastewater from the coal chemical industry in China: Environmental management policy and technical standards

Jingxin Shi et al.

Summary: To promote the modernization of the coal chemical industry, it is necessary to strengthen the responsibilities, supervision tasks, scope, and implementation rules of local environmental law enforcement and supervision agencies. Formulating a corresponding subsidy scheme to reduce the treatment cost of highly saline wastewater, accelerating research on the top-level design of the standard system for saline wastewater, integrating environmental management into daily production management, constantly improving management level, reducing pollution generation and emission, and increasing cooperation to promote the "green development, circular development, and low-carbon development" of the modern coal chemical industry.

Toxicity of hydraulic fracturing wastewater from black shale natural-gas wells influenced by well maturity and chemical additives

Mina Aghababaei et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the toxicity of wastewater generated from hydraulic fracturing, showing higher acute toxicity of early-stage flowback and drilling muds, which decreases as natural gas wells mature. Differences in toxicity were associated with specific chemical additives, with wells containing more organic additives showing higher acute toxicity, while wells with higher levels of ammonium persulfate displaying greater mammalian toxicity. Acute toxicity and thiol reactivity were consistently detected in produced waters, emphasizing the need for cautious management of early produced fluids.
