A Case Study of Deep DNAPL Contamination in Marine Soft Clays

Yanbin Gao et al.

Summary: Aquifers in China's southeast coastal areas are protected by marine soft clays, but understanding of DNAPL contamination in these clays is limited. A study conducted on a former pharmaceutical factory site in Shanghai found serious 1,1,2-trichloroethane (DNAPL) contamination. The contamination was found to accumulate at the interface of the upper soft silty clay and lower soft clay, and the vertical transport was determined to be due to the displacement of pore water by pure DNAPL.

Dynamic development of geochemical reaction fronts during hydraulic stimulation of shale

Vincent Noel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of carbonate mineral content on fluid transport and chemical reactions in shale formations during hydraulic fracturing. The results show that the calcite content directly affects the rate and spatial extent of fluid transport and matrix alteration, highlighting the importance of understanding the HFF-calcite reaction rates for optimizing hydraulic fracturing.

Distribution, pollution levels, and health risk assessment of heavy metals in groundwater in the main pepper production area of China

Mamattursun Eziz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatial distribution, pollution, and health risk of heavy metals in groundwater in the main pepper production area of China. The concentrations of six heavy metals were analyzed and the results showed that while the average concentrations were within the limits, the maximum concentrations exceeded the standard. The pollution levels of the heavy metals varied spatially, with manganese posing the highest risk. The non-carcinogenic risk of these metals, primarily from oral ingestion of groundwater, exceeded the acceptable range for children, with cadmium posing the most significant health risk.

Summary: This study examines the impact of shale-fluid reactions on fractured reservoir productivity, showing a decrease in porosity and liquid permeability of samples after exposure to fracture fluid. Significant geochemical reactions, including dissolution and precipitation of iron and calcite, were observed in the shale samples.
