Iron-calcium reinforced solidification of arsenic alkali residue in geopolymer composite: Wide pH stabilization and its mechanism

Yingfei Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a geopolymer composite synthesized from fly ash was used to stabilize high-arsenic-containing arsenic-alkali residue. The addition of granulated blast furnace slag and water-quenched slag effectively reduced the leaching concentration of arsenic, meeting the regulatory limits for waste landfill in China.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the coordination chemistry adsorption mechanism of commonly used collectors with oxygen-containing functional groups on the ilmenite surface using first-principles DFT calculations. The results showed that compounds with oxygen-containing pnictogen groups are the best choice for ilmenite beneficiation. The study also explained the chemical bonding mechanism between collectors and ilmenite.

Leaching of heavy metals from lead-zinc mine tailings and the subsequent migration and transformation characteristics in paddy soil

Rongguo Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the leaching of heavy metals (HMs) from lead-zinc mine tailings and its subsequent effects on paddy soil. The results showed that the concentrations of HMs in the leachate increased with the liquid-to-solid ratio, with Mn and Zn showing the highest increasing rates. When paddy soil was exposed to lead-zinc mine tailings, the HMs accumulated significantly and their contents increased over time. The vertical migration rates of HMs in the paddy soil varied, with Zn and Mn being more easily leached and migrated into deeper layers. The distribution of HMs in different chemical fractions also varied.

Remediation of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Soils with Soil Washing: A Review

Xiao-Jun Zheng et al.

Summary: Contamination of soil with heavy metals has become a global concern, leading to increased interest in the use of washing agents for soil remediation. This review summarizes recent findings on soil washing using different agents. Factors such as solubilizing capability, toxicity, and biocompatibility are crucial considerations for soil washing technologies. While some agents have limitations due to their adverse effects on soil, biosurfactants, humic acids, and low-molecular-weight organic acids have been suggested as suitable washing agents. The combination of agents and sequential washing have been adopted to enhance the overall effectiveness of the washing process, although environmental risks may arise. Overall, soil washing shows promising prospects for soil remediation.

LONG-TERM stability of arsenic in iron amended contaminated soil

Jurate Kumpiene et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term efficiency of soil remediation using zerovalent iron to stabilize arsenic contaminated soil. The results showed that even after 15 years, substantial amounts of ferrihydrite and lepidocrocite were still present in the soils, contributing to arsenic immobilization. Both sequential extraction and EXAFS techniques were effective in highlighting arsenic immobilization by poorly crystalline iron phases.

Remediation of zinc-contaminated soils by using the two-step washing with citric acid and water-soluble chitosan

Wei Hu et al.

Summary: This study successfully removed zinc from heavy metal contaminated soils using a two-step washing method with citric acid and water-soluble chitosan, significantly decreasing the total concentration of zinc in the soil, particularly in the carbonate-bound fraction. The washing mechanism may involve acid dissolution, ion exchange, and complexation reactions between zinc ions and functional groups like hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine, and amide groups. This research provides theoretical support for the development and application of suitable washing agents for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils.

Heavy Metal Pollution Assessment in Stream Sediments from Urban and Different Types of Industrial Areas in South Korea

Hyeryeong Jeong et al.

Summary: The study in heavily industrialized areas in Korea revealed that stream sediments near the Onsan industrial complex had significantly higher concentrations of heavy metals compared to urban and other industrial areas. Pollutants from smelting activities in the area exceeded safety levels and could have adverse effects on biota. Pollution load index values were highest near smelters, indicating the severity of metal pollution in the environment.

Release behavior of heavy metals from soil in ultrasound-assisted EDTA washing

Sen Chen et al.

Summary: Research indicates that ultrasound treatment alone is hardly effective in removing lead and zinc, while EDTA washing alone can remove about 64% of lead and zinc, respectively. EDTA + US not only achieves higher maximum removal efficiencies than EDTA washing alone, but also shortens the washing time significantly and reduces the amount of EDTA used. This acceleration and improvement in removal efficiency may be attributed to the form transfer effect of ultrasound and the removal effect of EDTA.
