The wild plant Gnaphalium lavandulifolium as a sentinel for biomonitoring the effects of environmental heavy metals in the metropolitan area of Mexico Valley

Josefina Cortes-Eslava et al.

Summary: Biomonitoring is a valuable tool for assessing the presence and effects of air pollutants such as heavy metals. A study on the wild plant Gnaphalium lavandulifolium in the metropolitan area of Mexico Valley showed that exposure to HM pollution led to increased toxicity levels and structural changes in the plant leaves, confirming its usefulness as a biomonitor of HM contamination.

Determination and Mapping of Regional Change of Pb and Cr Pollution in Ankara City Center

Mehmet Cetin et al.

Summary: As residential areas continue to expand in Turkey, environmental pollution, especially heavy metal pollution, has become a major concern. This study focused on mapping the pollution levels of lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) in the city center of Ankara, Turkey using topsoil samples. The results showed that the highest concentration of Cr was found in the northwest-southeast axis of the study area, while the highest concentration of Pb was located in the center of the study area, specifically in the west of Sincan town.

Examination of the Change in the Vegetation Around the Kirka Boron Mine Site by Using Remote Sensing Techniques

Mehmet Cetin et al.

Summary: The change in vegetation cover in Kirka boron mining site was examined using unsupervised classification and vegetation indexes from satellite images. The boundary of the mining area could not be determined using vegetation indexes, but unsupervised classification techniques revealed that the mining area occupies 1144.5 hectares. NDVI and NDRe analyses showed different results on water surfaces, while similar results were found in the rest of the areas. Sentinel satellite images, with higher spatial resolution, were able to capture more details compared to Landsat images in NDVI analyses.

Using Topsoil Analysis to Determine and Map Changes in Ni Co Pollution

Mehmet Cetin et al.

Summary: The change in soil quality due to soil pollution significantly affects the ecosystem. Heavy metals, such as nickel and cobalt, are particularly notorious as environmental pollutants due to their toxicity and bioaccumulation. Monitoring and mapping their concentrations is of great importance. In this study, top soil samples from the city center were analyzed for nickel and cobalt concentrations, and the data were statistically evaluated and mapped using geographic information systems (GIS) and interpolation methods. The results showed that the areas with the highest concentrations were generally located in the center of the study area, indicating increased pollution in areas with high human activities.

Hysteresis of heavy metals uptake induced in Taraxacum officinale by thiuram

Dorota Adamczyk-Szabela et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term effects of the fungicide thiuram on dandelion growth and photosynthesis, finding that the decomposition of thiuram promoted plant growth and significantly affected the uptake and transport of heavy metals. This resulted in a phenomenon termed as "hysteresis of heavy metals uptake" in the soil-plant system.
