Global burden of hepatitis B virus: current status, missed opportunities and a call for action

Yao-Chun Hsu et al.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has a significant global impact, leading to cirrhosis, liver cancer, and other complications. Despite efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis, the number of deaths from HBV is projected to increase if current measures are not improved. This review discusses the global burden of HBV infection, identifies gaps in care, and proposes solutions to achieve WHO's goal of eliminating HBV by 2030.

Mapping hepatitis B virus genotypes on the African continent from 1997 to 2021: a systematic review with meta-analysis

Hussein Mukasa Kafeero et al.

Summary: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has diverse genotypes and sub-genotypes that affect disease prognosis and transmission routes. This study analyzed de novo genotypes and their correlation with immigration trends to understand the relative distribution of HBV genotypes. The findings showed that genotype E had the highest prevalence, and different genotypes were prevalent in different regions of Africa. Genotypes B and C were emerging and had different distributions within the continent.

Hepatitis B Virus Research in South Africa

Mohube B. Maepa et al.

Summary: Despite being vaccine-preventable, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a significant burden on public health in South Africa. Over 1.9 million people in South Africa are chronically infected with HBV, with 70% of Black chronic carriers infected with HBV subgenotype A1. HIV infection amplifies HBV replication and complicates management of the infection. Research on HBV in South Africa has made progress in understanding its epidemiology and management challenges, leading to recent revision of national guidelines and development of new vaccines and gene therapies.
