Phase variety in ionic liquids: Hydrogen bonding and molecular conformations

Hiroshi Abe

Summary: Ionic liquids exhibit phase variety due to the degrees of freedom of hydrogen bonding and molecular conformations, with connections to liquid, amorphous, and crystal phases. The nano-structures of ILs are spontaneously formed in the liquid state, and the phase varieties, including metastable phases, are related to molecular conformations. In the IL-water system, the hydrogen bonding of water is modified, leading to the appearance of nano-confined water with clarified static and dynamic behaviors.

Entropic formation of a thermodynamically stable colloidal quasicrystal with negligible phason strain

Kwanghwi Je et al.

Summary: The research investigates the entropically driven growth of colloidal dodecagonal quasicrystals (DQCs) through computer simulations, showing that soft-matter quasicrystals dominated by entropy can be thermodynamically stable and grown with high structural quality, similar to their alloy quasicrystal counterparts.

High-pressure crystal polymorphs in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium perfluorobutanesulfonate

Yoshihiro Koyama et al.

Summary: The high-pressure crystal polymorph of a fluorinated ionic liquid was determined through X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, revealing irreversible changes in crystal structure upon compression and decompression. Conformational variance/invariance of the ions in the Raman spectra corresponded to the high-pressure crystal polymorph, indicating a switch in conformational variance at a specific pressure point leading to a change in crystal system. The high-pressure crystal polymorph was shown to be entirely different from the low-temperature crystal polymorph.
