Oral delivery of therapeutic peptides and proteins: Technology landscape of lipid-based nanocarriers

Soheil Haddadzadegan et al.

Summary: The oral administration of therapeutic peptides and proteins faces various barriers, which can be overcome by using lipid-based nanocarriers. These nanocarriers enhance the lipophilic character of the drugs and protect them from enzymatic degradation. They can penetrate mucus and absorption membranes, enabling systemic delivery of the therapeutic molecules. Lipid-based nanocarriers show promising stability and delivery efficacy.

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of ESBL-producing Klebsiella Pneumoniae from broiler chicken farms in Shandong Province, China

Zixuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the serotypes and antibiotic resistance profiles of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from broiler chickens on farms in Shandong Province, China. The results showed that these isolates exhibited resistance to multiple antibiotics, with a high carrying rate of beta-lactam resistance genes. Carbapenem-resistant and colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae were also detected in broiler chickens, indicating a potential threat to food safety and public health.

Quorum Sensing in ESKAPE Bugs: A Target for Combating Antimicrobial Resistance and Bacterial Virulence

Sirijan Santajit et al.

Summary: Quorum sensing in ESKAPE bacteria is a global threat to public health, leading to increased antimicrobial resistance, virulence production, and biofilm formation, reducing treatment options. Understanding the mechanisms of quorum sensing can help predict underlying mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and pathogenesis. This review discusses antibiotic resistance and pathogenesis caused by quorum sensing in ESKAPE pathogens, as well as strategies to control quorum sensing.

Evaluation of In Vitro Cytotoxic, Genotoxic, Apoptotic, and Cell Cycle Arrest Potential of Iron-Nickel Alloy Nanoparticles

Ozgur Vatan

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Fe-Ni ANP exposure on human health at the cellular level. The results showed that Fe-Ni ANPs had cytotoxic and genotoxic potentials, and exerted their effects through apoptotic pathways and cell cycle arrest mechanisms. Additionally, the increased intracellular ROS was identified as the primary mechanism leading to cytotoxic, genotoxic, and apoptotic activity. These findings further demonstrated the potential risks of Fe-Ni ANPs to human health.

Anti-virulence therapeutic strategies against bacterial infections: recent advances

Razieh Dehbanipour et al.

Summary: Antivirulence therapy is a strategy to weaken pathogens by blocking bacterial virulence factors or pathogenicity, reducing the use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials and the prevalence of resistant strains. Recent antivirulence strategies mainly focus on adhesins, toxins, and bacterial communication, with some studies also examining two-component systems and ncRNA elements as targets.

Bacterial Quorum-Quenching Lactonase Hydrolyzes Fungal Mycotoxin and Reduces Pathogenicity of Penicillium expansum-Suggesting a Mechanism of Bacterial Antagonism

Shlomit Dor et al.

Summary: Penicillium expansum is a necrotrophic fungal pathogen that produces virulence factors to kill host cells. Bacteria-fungal communication plays a crucial role in pathogenicity, with quorum-sensing being a key regulatory mechanism in pathogen control.

Detection of Quorum Sensing N-Acyl-Homoserine Lactone Molecules Produced by Different Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolates Recovered from Poultry and Different Environmental Niches

Reham A. Hosny et al.

Summary: This study aimed to detect and identify N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) produced by resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from poultry and environmental samples using a modified high-performance liquid chromatography method. The study found various short- and long-chain AHLs in the isolates, with C4-HSL, C6-HSL, and C12-HSL being the most quantifiable AHL signal molecules in poultry samples. No statistical correlation between AHL production and antibiotic resistance was reported.
