Association of single nucleotide polymorphisms in heat stress protein 70 (HSP70) and 90 (HSP90) with the susceptibility of Pakistani sheep breeds to hemoparasitic infections

Muhammad Sheraz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the genotype and allelic frequency of SNP at 222 G > A in HSP70 and at ex6-7390T22G in the HSP90 gene in 204 sheep from Punjab. The tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS-PCR) revealed significant genotype frequency variation in the HSP70 gene, while the allelic frequency remained unaffected. The study suggests the genotypic screening of sheep before selection as breeders to improve the profitability and sustainability of animal production systems in Pakistan.

Muhammad Naeem et al.

Summary: The prevalence of Anaplasma ovis in Pakistani sheep was investigated using PCR-based methods. Out of 239 samples collected from District Dera Ghazi Khan, 30 (12.5%) showed infection with Anaplasma ovis. The identified strain was found to be highly conserved and similar to strains from other countries.

Prevalence, epidemiology, seasonality, and phylogeny of Anaplasma marginale in blood samples of goats collected from Punjab, Pakistan

Muhammad Naveed Aziz et al.

Summary: Tick and tick-borne diseases pose a major constraint to goat farming in Pakistan. This study investigated the molecular prevalence of Anaplasma marginale in goat blood samples from Khanewal district, Punjab. The results showed variations in prevalence according to sampling season and goat breed, with higher rates in summer and autumn. Age and the presence of dogs in goat herds were identified as risk factors for seasonal ovine anaplasmosis. A. marginale infection affected white and red blood cell counts in goats.

Prevalence of Anaplasma marginale in cattle blood samples collected from two important livestock regions in Punjab (Pakistan) with a note on epidemiology and phylogeny of parasite

Shahzadi Noor Ul Ain Zafar et al.

Summary: Anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma marginale is a frequently reported tick-borne disease in tropical and sub-tropical countries. This study examined the prevalence and phylogenetic origin of A. marginale in cattle blood samples from two livestock regions in Punjab Province, Pakistan. The results showed a higher prevalence of A. marginale in cattle from Dera Ghazi Khan compared to Lodhran, and all cattle breeds in both districts were equally susceptible to the infection.

First report on molecular epidemiology, seasonality and phylogeny of Toxoplasma gondii infecting goats from Khanewal district in Punjab, Pakistan

Muhammad Naveed Aziz et al.

Summary: Raising small ruminants is crucial for farmers' income in Pakistan. This study investigates the seasonal and molecular prevalence of T. gondii in different breeds of goats in Khanewal district, Punjab, Pakistan. The results show a relatively low prevalence of T. gondii, with the highest prevalence observed in summer. Factors such as male goats, neighboring farms with other dairy animals, and water supply from pools are associated with higher infection rates.

Summary: This study developed a duplex PCR assay targeting specific genes (msp2 and msp4) to analyze Anaplasma infections in small ruminants in Tunisia. The results showed that 78.3% of the analyzed animals were infected with Anaplasma, with A. ovis having a higher prevalence than A. phagocytophilum. A. phagocytophilum generally presented as a co-infection with A. ovis.

Summary: The knowledge on occurrence of pathogenic tick-borne bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma ovis in sheep in Germany is limited. A study conducted in 2020 reported that most affected sheep suffered from selenium deficiency and endoparasites. Serological tests and qPCR confirmed the presence of A. phagocytophilum and A. ovis in the sheep population, indicating the need for further investigations on the dissemination and health impact of the pathogens in German sheep, especially in the presence of comorbidities.
