Suspension HVOF Sprayed Ytterbium Disilicate Environmental Barrier Coatings

Dianying Chen

Summary: In this study, Yb2Si2O7 coatings were deposited on Si-based ceramic matrix composites using the suspension HVOF process. The effect of standoff distance on coating microstructure was evaluated, and it was found that shorter standoff distances resulted in denser amorphous coatings transforming to crystalline phases after heat treatment. Furthermore, the oxidation behavior of the SHVOF EBCs was compared with air plasma sprayed EBCs and showed a slower oxide growth rate.

Thin single-phase yttrium-based environmental barrier coating systems for SiC/SiC CMCs

Vito Leisner et al.

Summary: Two thin yttrium silicate-based EBC systems were produced and tested under high temperature conditions. The systems showed satisfactory performance in furnace cycle tests, but one of them exhibited partial delamination. The presence of cracks in the YMS layer provided possible attack paths for water vapor. Rapid water vapor testing demonstrated the protective ability of a thin and phase pure YMS top layer.

Reactive Sputtered Ytterbium Silicate Environmental Barrier Coatings for Protection of Mo-Si-Based Alloys

Ronja Anton et al.

Summary: The implementation of a structural material into the hot section of a turbine engine requires protection against oxidation and water vapor. In this study, rare earth silicates were used as protective coatings and combined with other layers to form an environmental barrier coating system. The coatings showed promising results in oxidation protection and completely suppressed the pesting phenomenon.

Quo Vadis: AlCr-Based Coatings in Industrial Applications

Joerg Vetter et al.

Summary: AlCr-based hard nitride coatings with different chemical compositions and structures have been successfully developed and applied, with properties mainly influenced by deposition conditions and Al/Cr content. Various alloying concepts and coating structures have been explored to enhance oxidation resistance, wear behavior, and tribological properties.

Thermal Cycling Behavior of Air Plasma-Sprayed and Low-Pressure Plasma-Sprayed Environmental Barrier Coatings

Dianying Chen et al.

Summary: Yb2Si2O7/Si environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) produced by low-pressure plasma spray (LPPS) exhibit superior durability compared to those produced by air plasma spray (APS) due to significantly reduced thermally grown oxide (TGO) growth rate, denser and crack-free microstructure, higher bonding strength, and reduced coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch in LPPS EBCs.
