Microstructures and tensile properties of low-cost TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V composites by vacuum reactive hot pressing

Zeqi Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, TiBw/Ti-6Al-4V composites were designed and fabricated using coarse Ti-6Al-4V powder. The microstructures and tensile properties were investigated, and the strengthening mechanisms were analyzed. The results showed that the composites exhibited high strength and ductility, with a tensile strength of 952 MPa and an elongation of 18.4% at room temperature. Additionally, the composites also showed excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures. This work demonstrates the feasibility of designing low-cost titanium matrix composites using coarse spherical powder and network microstructures.

Effects of power density on residual stress and microstructural behavior of Ti-2.5Cu alloy by laser shock peening without coating

M. V. Nataraj et al.

Summary: This study investigates the micro structural changes of Ti-2.5 Cu after laser peening with different laser intensities. XRD, EBSD, and TEM were used to analyze the microstructure. XPS was used to characterize the oxidation behavior of the samples. The results showed an increase in compressive residual stress and improved micro hardness with increasing laser intensity. TEM studies revealed nano precipitates, mechanical twins, and dislocation structures. EBSD results confirmed the formation of high angle grain boundaries and mechanical twins at higher laser energy.

Keywords: Titanium matrix composites Electron beam remelting Microstructure evolution High-temperature oxidation behavior

HaoYang Zhang et al.

Summary: Electron beam remelting is an effective method to improve the strength and hardness of material surface by regulating the geometry and microstructure of grains and reinforcements. In this study, the microstructure and high-temperature oxidation behavior of remelted TiBw/TC4 composites with different heat inputs were systematically investigated. The preferentially precipitated TiBw acted as heterogeneous nucleation site to accelerate the nucleation and growth of TC4 alloy, and were pushed to the grain boundary due to the interfacial energy. The remelted nanoscale TiB whisker showed stacking faults with crystal structures of B27 and Bf. The surface hardness increased by nearly 40% under a line energy of 96 J/mm (4 mA) due to the smaller network structure TiBw and a moderate thickness remelting layer. After electron beam remelting treatment, the oxidation resistance of the composite was significantly improved due to the segregation of aluminum on the surface of the remelting layer during oxidation.

Effect of heat treatment on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V and TiB/Ti-6Al-4V composite: A comparative study

Hailiang Li et al.

Summary: Post heat treatment significantly influences the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of SLM-fabricated Ti-6Al-4V alloy and titanium matrix composite. The TiB precipitates in the TMC samples grew into larger whiskers with improved mechanical performance after heat treatment. A finer dual-phase matrix microstructure was achieved for TMC samples with higher yield strength after heat treatment.

Developing Cu modified Ti6Al4V alloys with a combination of high strength and ductility by electron beam freeform fabrication

Xiangshuo Li et al.

Summary: A thin-wall structure of Ti6Al4V-3Cu was prepared using electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) with Cu plated wire and a novel in-situ alloying method. The addition of Cu led to significant refinement of prior-beta grain, resulting in improved strength without significant decrease in ductility.

Influence of the sintering temperature on the microstructure, mechanical properties and densification characteristics of (TiB + TiC)/TC4 composite

Zheng-Yang Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, TiB whiskers and TiC particles reinforced TC4 matrix composites were synthesized by spark plasma sintering using a TC4-0.6wt.% B4C powder mixture at temperatures ranging from 550 degrees C to 1150 degrees C. The composite sintered at 1050 degrees C exhibited the highest tensile strength, yield strength, and plasticity. The aspect ratio of TiB whiskers increased almost linearly below 1050 degrees C, while the grain size of TiC increased with sintering temperature.

Precipitation behavior of silicide and synergetic strengthening mechanisms in TiB-reinforced high-temperature titanium matrix composites during multi-directional forging

Shichen Sun et al.

Summary: A TiB-reinforced high-temperature titanium matrix composite was prepared using vacuum induction melting and multi-directional forging, leading to changes in both strength and plasticity. The precipitation behavior of silicides during forging was accelerated, enhancing the strength of the composite, but at high temperatures, the precipitation strengthening effect of silicides weakened, resulting in a decrease in strength.
