Intrinsic Defect Limit to the Growth of Orthorhombic HfO2 and (Hf,Zr)O2 with Strong Ferroelectricity: First-Principles Insights

Jinchen Wei et al.

Summary: It is believed that promoting the formation of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase in HfO2 and (Hf,Zr)O-2 thin films through O-poor growth conditions can increase polarization. However, the easy formation of point defects can limit growth and decrease polarization, emphasizing the importance of controlling defects.

Water treatment based on atomically engineered materials: Atomic layer deposition and beyond

Xiaobin Yang et al.

Summary: Global water stress and challenges for producing sufficient supplies of fit-for-purpose water are driving development of atomically engineered interfaces as a powerful tool in the fabrication of advanced water treatment materials. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) and related methods offer a diverse library of chemistries for interface functionalization, enabling precise manipulation of thickness, stoichiometry, and physicochemical properties. By utilizing ALD/SIS engineering strategies, such as precise deposition and growth with intermediate layers, efficient water treatment can be realized, laying the groundwork for a universal functionalization platform for water treatment. Synergies with other widely used interface engineering techniques are also explored to develop facile, versatile, and energy-efficient strategies for addressing increasingly complex water challenges.
