Linking supply-demand balance of ecosystem services to identify ecological security patterns in urban agglomerations

Qiqi Jia et al.

Summary: Ecological Security Patterns (ESP) is an effective method for identifying priority conservation areas and maintaining regional ecological security. Previous ESP studies focused only on the supply of ecosystem services (ES), neglecting the supply-demand interaction of ES. In this study, a novel large-scale ESP framework was proposed that incorporated the scarcity of ES supply and demand to revise the identification of ecological sources. The results showed that the reconstructed approach significantly increased ecological source areas and enhanced connectivity among them, and the scarcity idea can guide trans-administrative ecological decision making.

Assessing local people?s perceptions and preference for ecosystem services to support management plan in Omo Biosphere Reserve, Nigeria

Opeyemi Adeyemi et al.

Summary: Little attention has been paid to local people's perception of and preferences for ecosystem services (ES), especially in developing countries. This study conducted an ES assessment in Omo Biosphere Reserve (OBR), Nigeria, and found that residents prioritize crops, fruits, water, and firewood. The study also revealed a high priority for ES in the northwestern, eastern, and southern regions of the reserve. Factors such as gender, age group, education level, income level, and household size influenced the importance of ES, but only income and household size influenced the willingness of local people to conserve ES.

From city in the park to ?greenery in plant pots?: The influence of socialist and post-socialist planning on opportunities for cultural ecosystem services

Neven Tandaric et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between the concept of cultural ecosystem services, political ideologies, and urban planning. The study focuses on the consideration of cultural ecosystem services in urban planning in socialist and post-socialist Zagreb. The findings reveal that socialist planning facilitated greater opportunities for human-ecosystem interactions compared to post-socialist planning.
