SHEAR-WAVE DISPERSION SLOPE OF THE LIVER: EFFECT OF STUDY PROTOCOL AND ASCITES ON THE MEASUREMENT APPLICABILITY

Xiao-Qing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the shear-wave dispersion (SWD) scanning protocol, including the minimum number of measurements and better size of the region of interest (ROI), as well as the influence of ascites on the measurement applicability. The study found that a minimum of five measurements when using a 20-mm ROI and six measurements when using a 10-mm ROI were required. A larger ROI was associated with higher reliability, and ascites influenced the failure and reliability of the SWD measurement.

Reliability of Performing Multiparametric Ultrasound in Adult Livers

Jing Gao et al.

Summary: The study aimed to test the reliability of measuring multiple ultrasound parameters in adult livers. Results showed that repeatability and reproducibility for liver SWV, ATI, and NLV measurements were moderate to excellent, while those for SWD and L/K ratio measurements were poor. Standardized machine settings, scanning protocols, and operator training are recommended for performing multiparametric ultrasound of the liver.

Shear wave dispersion to assess liver disease progression in Fontan-associated liver disease

Tomoaki Nagasawa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the dispersion slope (DS) using shear wave dispersion (SWD) in patients with Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) and investigate its utility as a biomarker of disease progression. The results showed that DS measured by SWD reflects the severity of liver damage in FALD patients and has a significant correlation with central venous pressure and liver stiffness measurements. SWD and 2D-SWE have strong diagnostic capabilities for significant fibrosis.

Shear Wave Dispersion Slope Measured with Shear Wave Dispersion Imaging Is Associated with Variceal Hemorrhage in Cirrhotic Patients

Xiaohui Sun et al.

Summary: The shear wave dispersion slope (SWDS), spleen diameter, and ascites were identified as independent risk factors for variceal hemorrhage (VH) in cirrhosis. The combination of these three risk factors resulted in good diagnostic accuracy for VH.

Two-dimensionalShear-Wave Elastography and US Attenuation Imaging for Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Diagnosis: A Cross-sectional, Multicenter Study

Jong Keon Jang et al.

Summary: Multiparametric US examination has potential in evaluating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) comprehensively. This multicenter study assessed the diagnostic performance of multiparametric US with attenuation coefficient (AC) from attenuation imaging (ATI), as well as liver stiffness (LS) and dispersion slope (DS) from two-dimensional (2D) shear-wave elastography (SWE) in NAFLD patients. The study found that US attenuation imaging and 2D SWE were useful for assessing hepatic steatosis, lobular inflammation, and fibrosis, and the risk score system using AC and DS showed the best diagnostic performance for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Performance and cutoffs for liver fibrosis staging of a two-dimensional shear wave elastography technique

Summary: The study demonstrates that the 2-dimensional shear wave elastography technique is accurate in staging liver fibrosis and shows a high correlation with liver fibrosis. Despite a weak correlation with steatosis, shear-wave-speed dispersion is closely associated with liver fibrosis.

Accuracy of Two-Dimensional Shear Wave Elastography and Attenuation Imaging for Evaluation of Patients With Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Dong Ho Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a multiparametric approach using attenuation imaging and 2D-SWE was evaluated for the detection of steatosis and fibrosis in NAFLD patients. The attenuation coefficient was associated with steatosis grade, liver stiffness with fibrosis stage, and SWDS with lobular inflammation. A risk scoring system based on these parameters showed high accuracy in identifying patients with steatohepatitis.

Radiological Society of North America/Quantitative Imaging Biomarker Alliance Shear Wave Speed Bias Quantification in Elastic and Viscoelastic Phantoms

Mark L. Palmeri et al.

Summary: The study found that shear wave speed measurements across different manufacturer systems are more consistent in elastic phantoms, with a mean difference bias of < +/- 10% in all cases. Magnetic resonance elastography best matches ultrasonic systems in both elastic and viscoelastic phantoms with a 140-Hz excitation, but has a significant negative bias when operating at 60 Hz. This research establishes a foundation for meaningful comparison of SWS measurements made with different platforms.

SOURCES OF VARIABILITY IN SHEAR WAVE SPEED AND DISPERSION QUANTIFICATION WITH ULTRASOUND ELASTOGRAPHY: A PHANTOM STUDY

Naiara Korta Martiartu et al.

Summary: Operator-dependent acquisition parameters influenced SWD and SWS measurements, with acquisition depth being the main contributing factor to variance and lateral ROI position contributing significantly to SWD variance. Results emphasize the importance of considering depth- and lateral-dependent variability in future guidelines for multiparametric elastography.
