Tsung-Rong Lin et al.

Summary: We established a downstream plasma-aerosol mixing system to increase the generation of center dot OH in an atmospheric pressure plasma jet. Our method can increase the reaction area between water and plasma and prevent water from quenching the plasma.

Simultaneous hydrodynamic cavitation and glow plasma discharge for the degradation of metronidazole in drinking water

Thiago Castanho Pereira et al.

Summary: A novel hydrodynamic cavitation unit combined with a glow plasma discharge system (HC-GPD) was proposed for the degradation of pharmaceutical compounds in drinking water. The synergistic effect between hydrodynamic cavitation and glow plasma discharge promoted the production of hydroxyl radicals, emission of UV light, and shock waves for the degradation of metronidazole (MNZ). Experimental results showed that MNZ degradation was enhanced from 14% to 90% in 15 min when using the HC-GPD system compared to the HC alone.

Ashish Mohod et al.

Summary: Hydrodynamic cavitation is a promising technology for removing harmful chemicals from wastewater. This study provides a critical analysis of hydrodynamic cavitation reactors, discussing design aspects and approaches to improve the operation. Factors that influence degradation are thoroughly examined, and guidelines for selecting the best operating conditions are provided. The combination of hydrodynamic cavitation with other advanced oxidation processes is shown to offer significant process intensification and economic feasibility for industrial effluent treatment.

Microbubble-enhanced water activation by cold plasma

Yawen Gao et al.

Summary: This study reports a new method for enhancing plasma activation efficiency in water flow using bubbles. Experimental results show that this method can achieve more than 5 times higher activation efficiency compared to the configuration without bubbles under the same energy input. Computational fluid dynamic simulations were also conducted to analyze the gas volume fraction, pressure, velocity distributions, and bubble behaviors.

Degradation of sulfadiazine in a cyclic V-SDBD plasma system: Parameters analysis and degradation pathway

Kun Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, a cyclic volume and surface dielectric barrier discharge (V-SDBD) plasma wastewater treatment system with stainless steel net as discharge electrode was established and applied to the degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The discharge characteristics, active substance yield, and relative emission spectra in different net electrode systems were compared. The results showed that the SDZ had a better degradation in the cyclic V-SDBD system than in the intermittent DBD system. The 10-mesh stainless steel net and 333 mL/min circulating flow rate were determined as the optimal reaction conditions for the SDZ degradation.

A review on degradation of perfluorinated compounds based on ultraviolet advanced oxidation

Xuelin Wang et al.

Summary: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are emerging persistent pollutants that pose a threat to human health and the environment. UV-based AOPs show good application prospects for the removal of PFCs due to their high removal efficiency. Research on various UV-based AOPs in terms of degradation pathways, efficiency, influencing factors, and by-product formation has been systematically reviewed.

Luminescence intensity of vortex cavitation in a Venturi tube changing with cavitation number

Hitoshi Soyama

Summary: The study investigates the luminescence produced by hydrodynamic cavitation in a Venturi tube and the factors affecting its intensity, such as sound velocity and the collapse of vortex cavitation. A method to estimate the luminescence intensity considering the sound velocity was developed, showing good agreement with measured values.

A critical review on ozone and co-species, generation and reaction mechanisms in plasma induced by dielectric barrier discharge technologies for wastewater remediation

Emile Salomon Massima Mouele et al.

Summary: The development of cost-effective, feasible, and advanced wastewater treatment techniques are crucial for the availability and sustainability of scarce water resources. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on non thermal plasma processes like dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) have shown promise in combating biologically recalcitrant organic substances in water and wastewater streams by generating in-situ UV light and reactive oxygen species. Optimization of catalyst additives and critical parameters such as pH in DBD methods can efficiently promote the decomposition and mineralization of water toxins. Double cylindrical DBD designs have been highlighted as superior to single cylindrical and conventional DBDs.
