Imaging and measuring the electronic properties of epitaxial graphene with a photoemission electron microscope

F. Niefind et al.

Summary: A photoemission electron microscope (PEEM) was used to image and analyze epitaxial graphene, with the instrument's capabilities, spatial resolution, and sensitivity determined. Different regions on the graphene surface were identified based on intensity contrast, and the flatband in monolayer epitaxial graphene was observed, attributed to compressive strain in the sample.

Photoexcited Electron Dynamics in Cd3As2 Revealed by Time- and Energy-Resolved Photoemission Electron Microscopy

Zhaohang Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamics of Cd3As2 nanoplates were investigated using photoemission electron microscopy combined with the femtosecond pump-probe technique. It was found that the photoexcited electrons on the Cd3As2 surface decay rapidly, independent of spatial location, with negligible effect of boundary states. Additionally, the decay time of nonequilibrium electrons decreases with increasing energy.

Optimizing performance and yield of vertical GaN diodes using wafer scale optical techniques

James C. Gallagher et al.

Summary: In order to improve the manufacturing process of vertical GaN devices for power electronics applications, it is necessary to have a better understanding of the effects of defects in GaN substrates. Various non-destructive techniques, including photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy and optical profilometry, were used to detect defects in the substrate and epitaxial layers. It was found that high crystal stress increased the probability of device failure, while an inhomogeneous carrier concentration had little effect on reverse bias behavior.

Nanoimaging of the Edge-Dependent Optical Polarization Anisotropy of Black Phosphorus

Prakriti P. Joshi et al.

Summary: This study used polarization-dependent photoemission electron microscopy to visualize the anisotropic optical absorption of black phosphorus (BP) flakes and found different characteristics of optical absorption at the edges compared to the interior. This phenomenon is caused by changes in the charge distribution and transition dipole moments of edge electronic states.

Unraveling the varied nature and roles of defects in hybrid halide perovskites with time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy

Sofiia Kosar et al.

Summary: Hybrid perovskite solar cells show promise as next generation, low-cost photovoltaic technologies, but nanoscale defect clusters formed during fabrication are critical to device efficiency and stability. Research has identified different types of defect clusters and their impact on device performance, as well as the varied response of defects to passivation strategies. Tailored multi-pronged approaches are needed to selectively address the detrimental impact of different defect types in hybrid perovskite solar cells.
