Experimental Investigation on the Wear Performance of Nano-Additives on Degraded Gear Lubricant

Harish Hirani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of a commercially available gear lubricant and explored the potential of nano-additives to reduce such degradation. Experimental studies were conducted on the chemical degradation of the lubricant by mixing different concentrations of hydrochloric acid, and the degradation was monitored using pH value, total acid number (TAN) value, and ATR-FTIR analysis. The experiments showed severe wear of the gear in chemically aged lubricant, which led to the exploration of suitable nano-additives. Graphite, graphene, and graphene oxide functionalized with silicon oxide (GO@SiO2) were chosen as the nano-additives, and tests were conducted to find the optimum additive for wear performance. The overall results indicate that nano-additives significantly reduce gear wear.

A calculation method for friction coefficient and meshing efficiency of plastic line gear pair under dry friction conditions

Yangzhi Chen et al.

Summary: A method for calculating the friction coefficient and meshing efficiency of plastic gear pairs under dry friction conditions was studied both theoretically and experimentally, with a focus on polyoxymethylene parallel line gear pairs as an example. The experimental results validated the feasibility of the proposed calculation method.

Investigation of the effect of contact pattern design on the mechanical and thermal behaviors of plastic-steel helical gear drives

Victor Roda-Casanova et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of contact pattern design on plastic-steel helical gear drives, finding that appropriate design of pinion tooth surfaces can reduce maximum contact pressure and operating temperature, increase durability, improve performance and efficiency, and enhance the transmission's ability to absorb angular misalignments.

Analytical procedure for the optimization of plastic gear tooth root

Luca Landi et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the importance of using innovative analytical methods to design and optimize the root geometry of plastic gears in the absence of specific standards for plastic gear development. By comparing the results with standardized methods and verifying them through finite element numerical analysis, the paper provides a useful approach for designers to reduce root bending stress in plastic gears.

Durability testing and characterization of POM gears

M. Hribersek et al.

Summary: Polymer gears are widely used in power train applications due to their advantageous properties. This paper investigates the wear mechanism of a steel/POM gear pair, analyzing wear progression throughout the gear lifetime and calculating wear coefficients to improve understanding. Wear is characterized using a 3D optical scanning device, with spot temperatures of meshing gears recorded during testing.
