Ti3C2Tx MXenes-An effective and long-storable oil lubricant additive

Tongyang Li et al.

Summary: This study presents the introduction of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets with N, N-dimethylformamide as a dispersion aid in 5750 oil to obtain stable dispersions. Ball-on-disk wear testers demonstrate that MXenes have better wear reduction and antiwear performance. Relative to contrapositive 5750, the oil added Ti3C2Tx has a lower friction coefficient and wear rate. Particularly, the addition of Ti3C2Tx reduced the wear rate by 92% under 100 N, 25 celcius. Therefore, MXenes have great advantages and potential as a lubricating additive.

Synthesis of MXene-Based Self-dispersing Additives for Enhanced Tribological Properties

Changzhi Zhou et al.

Summary: As an emerging class of two-dimensional materials, MXenes show great potential in lubrication systems for their excellent antifriction and wear resistance. However, achieving stable dispersion of MXenes in base oils remains a challenge. In this study, the microstructure of MXene was modulated through in-situ growth of hydroxysalts, forming a heterostructure that significantly improved dispersion stability in poly-alpha-olefin-10 base oil. The obtained MXene/hydroxysalts composite exhibited steady and reduced friction coefficient as well as decreased wear track dimensions, showing promise as a lubricant additive.

Fabrication of two-dimensional MXene nanosheets loading Cu nanoparticles as lubricant additives for friction and wear reduction

Yuhong Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, MXene@Cu nanocomposites were prepared by electrostatic adsorption and in-situ reduction. The MXene nanosheets successfully adsorbed Cu2+ and then underwent in-situ reduction to form Cu nanoparticle attached MXene hybrids. The MXene@Cu exhibited excellent tribological performance, reducing friction coefficient and wear volume loss. This can be attributed to the synergistic effect of MXene nanosheets and Cu nanoparticles, which form a stable protective film on the worn surface.
