iNEW method for experimental-numerical locomotive studies focused on rail wear prediction

Esteban Bernal et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a methodology to improve the accuracy of wear analyses of locomotive-track interaction by using dynamic simulations. The proposed method considers in-train forces and utilizes a co-simulation approach to implement simulation results on a detailed locomotive vehicle dynamic model. The wheel-rail contact stress and slip results are then processed into a Dynamic Load Spectrum. Experimental measurements using this method provided more realistic wear rates, allowing for accurate estimation of rail material volume loss.

Prediction of rail surface damage in locomotive traction operations using laboratory-field measured and calibrated data

Esteban Bernal et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a simulation modelling method to predict rail surface damage based on a locomotive digital twin, calibrated shakedown maps and friction measurements. The method improves the accuracy of rail damage predictions by including slip-dependent friction characteristics, co-simulation of locomotive traction mechatronic system and the mechanical properties of the wheel and rail materials measured through tensile tests.

Numerical study of wheel/rail dynamic interactions for high-speed rail vehicles under low adhesion conditions during traction

Bing Wu et al.

Summary: This study aims to reproduce the dynamic wheel-rail interaction behavior under various interfacial contaminations through experimental and numerical modeling methods, in order to simulate wheel-rail rolling contact damage. The study found that under high-speed and wet conditions, the wheelsets slide and experience severe wear in the low adhesion zone.

Experimental study on the wear and damage of wheel-rail steels under alternating temperature conditions

L. Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wear and rolling contact fatigue damage of wheel and rail materials under alternating temperature conditions. Results indicate that temperature changes can affect the wear and crack initiation on both the wheel and rail materials. Additionally, decreases in temperature can lead to increased plastic deformation and work hardening of the materials.
