Engine Oils in the Field: A Comprehensive Tribological Assessment of Engine Oil Degradation in a Passenger Car

Adam Agocs et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deterioration of friction and wear properties of engine oil during its service life and the differences in tribofilms formed under different oil conditions. The test results show a 9% increase in friction and over 420% increase in wear during the 20,000 km service life of the used oil samples. The composition of the tribofilms is found to be correlated with the degradation of additive in the used engine oils. Specifically, the degradation of zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) antiwear additive leads to significant changes in the tribofilms. The findings provide insights into the mechanism of tribofilm formation under real operating conditions.

Tribological evaluation of passenger car engine oil: Effect of friction modifiers

Mukesh Kumar Dubey et al.

Summary: The tribo-performance of passenger car engine oil with three friction modifiers (organic and inorganic) has been experimentally evaluated. The results showed that the inorganic friction modifiers yielded better tribological performances than organic friction modifiers, forming thicker protective tribo-film.

Investigation of Aviation Lubricant Aging under Engine Representative Conditions

Abdolkarim Sheikhansari et al.

Summary: This study monitored the physical and chemical changes of a synthetic ester-based aviation oil during thermal exposure, revealing the consumption of antioxidant additives such as DODPA and alpha-NPA. The increase in viscosity and TAN of the oil during thermal exposure, along with the comparison of reaction energy barriers for DODPA and alpha-NPA, were highlighted in the results.
