An investigation on fatigue crack propagation behavior of welded connections in UHPC reinforced OSDs using 3D crack simulation

Hesham Abdelbaset et al.

Summary: In this study, the fatigue crack propagation behavior of welded connections in orthotropic steel decks (OSDs) was investigated using 3D crack simulation. The results showed that the crack simulation analysis is acceptable and applicable for evaluating fatigue crack propagation in OSDs. The governing propagation mode of the welded joints is Mode I and the effect of shear and tearing is limited. The FAT100 curve of the IIW specification is recommended to predict the fatigue strength of the welded joints in OSDs.

Fretting fatigue lifetime estimation for heterogeneous material using critical distance with mesh control

Can Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, the theory of critical distance using volume method and mesh control approach is applied to predict the fretting fatigue lifetime, considering the existence of heterogeneity and defects in the material. The computational cost is reduced by using the mesh control approach, and the prediction accuracy is improved through the implementation of the Unit Cell (UC) models based on a sub-modelling technique. The Representative Volume Element (RVE) is applied for the estimations of fretting fatigue lifetimes using the homogenization method taking into account the heterogeneity of material.

LEFM crack path models evaluation under proportional and non-proportional load in low carbon steels using digital image correlation data

Jorge G. Diaz et al.

Summary: Crack path models were evaluated using experimentally obtained stress intensity factor (SIF) data for proportional and non-proportional loading conditions on plane and tubular ductile steel samples. While most models failed to match the experimental results for non-proportional loading, the strain energy density criterion (SED) showed a good agreement. The discrepancy can be attributed to the origins of the SIF ranges, which take into account accumulated plasticity and shielding due to crack roughness, as well as the non-proportionality of the mixed-mode applied load. The successful matching with SED is attributed to the inclusion of mode III and the specific evaluation method used. A comparison of computational cost for the different models suggests the need to consider the type of load and computing time in crack path model selection.

Investigation on fretting fatigue crack initiation in heterogenous materials using a hybrid of multiscale homogenization and direct numerical simulation

Can Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fretting fatigue behavior of mechanically fastened joints considering the heterogeneity of materials. The authors propose a combination of Multiscale Homogenization and Direct Numerical Simulation (MH-DNS) method to improve the prediction accuracy of fretting fatigue life. Different models are used to compare the results, and the MH-DNS model shows the best-predicted results.

Mixed mode I/II crack propagation in stainless steel 316L sheets by large plastic deformations: Prediction of critical load by combining LEFM with fictitious material concept

A. R. Torabi et al.

Summary: This research investigated the load carrying capacity (LCC) of O-notched diagonally loaded square plate (DLSP) samples with pre-existing cracks under mixed mode I/II loading both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental observations showed significant plastic deformations in the specimens at the onset of crack propagation. The theoretical prediction utilized the Fictitious Material Concept (FMC) and coupled it with stress based brittle fracture criteria to estimate the LCCs of the cracked DLSP samples successfully.
