Effect of grinding depths on SiC nanogrinding behavior based on molecular dynamics

Yingli Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the nanogrinding process of single-crystal silicon carbide using molecular dynamics, revealing that increasing grinding depth leads to gradual increases in atomic Y direction displacement, crystal defects, forces, and abrasive wear. Serious plastic deformation occurs at a depth of 3 nm, with substrate deformation extending in the Z direction. Additionally, the maximum value of von Mises stress fluctuates, providing theoretical support for the study of the mechanical properties of single-crystal silicon carbide.

Atomic Simulations of Deformation Mechanism of 3C-SiC Polishing Process with a Rolling Abrasive

Zhihua Yin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of abrasive rotational speed and rotation axis orientation on the friction characteristics and deformation behaviors of cubic silicon carbide during the polishing process. Results showed complex changes in normal and transverse forces with increasing rotational speed. A critical situation was identified at a specific rotational speed and rotation angle, where the material removal rate was lowest and subsurface damage was deepest. Phase transformation induced by high pressure was found to be more significant than that by thermal effect in the simulations.

Molecular dynamics simulations of scratching characteristics in vibration-assisted nano-scratch of single-crystal silicon

Yue Chen et al.

Summary: Vibration-assisted machining redistributes and rebalances anisotropy among applied forces, leading to reduced tangential and normal forces, suppression of anisotropic stress state, and changes in amorphous-layer thickness and scratched surface area. The magnitudes of tangential and normal components vary cyclically with double the frequency of applied vibration. Increasing vibration frequency decreases tangential and normal components and amorphous-layer thickness, while increasing vibration amplitude decreases tangential and normal components but may slightly increase amorphous-layer thickness. Vibration effectively transforms brittle material into ductile material at the working spot, suggesting a new route for optimization of vibration-assisted grinding processes.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation on Cutting Mechanism in the Hybrid Machining Process of Single-Crystal Silicon

Changlin Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the cutting mechanism in the hybrid machining process with thermal and vibration assistance. It was found that with the increasing cutting temperature, cracks generation and propagation are suppressed, and the dominant material removal mechanism transitions from extrusion to shearing, leading to subsurface damage formation. Additionally, the generation of vacancies in the workpiece becomes apparent with increasing temperature, which is a significant phenomenon in the hybrid machining process.
