The effect of microstructure and mechanical properties on sliding wear and cavitation erosion of plasma coatings sprayed from Al2O3+40 wt% TiO2 agglomerated powders

Leszek Latka et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the influence of 40 wt% TiO2 addition to Al2O3 and the selection of plasma spray parameters on the morphology, microstructure, microhardness and adhesion of coatings. The tribological behavior and cavitation erosion performance of the coatings were evaluated. The study found that increasing the torch scan speed and decreasing the spraying distance improved the densification and mechanical properties of the coatings, leading to enhanced cavitation erosion resistance.

Probing the low friction mechanism of hydrogen-free DLC film in oxygen and nitrogen environments by first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulation

Yunhai Liu et al.

Summary: We compared the interfacial bonding behavior of hydrogen-free DLC films in nitrogen and oxygen environments using first principle calculation and molecular dynamics simulation to understand the friction behavior at an atomic level. The results showed that hydrogen-free DLC films form C-N and C-O bonds when the nitrogen or oxygen coverage is below 0.75, but become completely passivated when the coverage exceeds 0.75. The lower C-O bond strength and higher repulsion force in the friction interface of DLC films in an oxygen atmosphere suggest a lower friction coefficient compared to the nitrogen environment. Molecular dynamics simulation results further indicate that the lower friction of DLC films in an oxygen atmosphere might be due to a smoother friction interface and fewer interfacial bonds.

Effect of pre-oxidation on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of Ni-based coating reinforced by ceramic particles

Liuqing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrochemical corrosion behavior of a NiCr coating reinforced by MoSi2 and AT40 ceramic phases, which is potential for use in seal coating. The composite coating was prepared on a nickel-based alloy surface using atmospheric plasma spraying. The results show that pre-oxidation improves corrosion resistance, with the best performance observed in the ceramics-added coating pre-oxidized at 900 degrees C. The influence of ceramics particle addition and element diffusion was discussed.

Efficient solar water evaporation enabled by Ti3O5/Ti4O7-based melamine-urea-formaldehyde aerogel evaporators

Ziyu Gui et al.

Summary: In the emerging solar water evaporation technology, inorganic semiconductors, particularly Magne'li phase titanium oxides, are being researched for their excellent photo-thermal conversion capabilities. This study focuses on fabricating evaporators using Ti3O5/Ti4O7 as the photo-thermal material and melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) aerogel as the matrix. The evaporators achieved high evaporation rates in both pure water and real seawater, solving the problem of salt accumulation fouling through the use of the ice-templated and cured MUF-based matrix.

Lubrication mechanisms of Nb-contained oxides characterizing tribochemistry of NiAl/Nb/Ag composites coatings revealed by the density functional theory (DFT) computation

Hongjian Guo et al.

Summary: The lubrication mechanisms of Nb-contained oxides were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) computation. It was found that a series of Nb-contained oxides, such as Nb2O5, AgNbO3, and NiNb2O6, were generated during the friction process of NiAl/Nb/Ag coatings as the temperature increased. The friction coefficients decreased from 0.51 to 0.54 at low temperatures to 0.24-0.27 at elevated temperature. The computational results showed that AgNbO3 and NiNb2O6 exhibited better lubrication performances than Nb2O5 due to the lower bonding energy of Ag-O and Ni-O bonds, which were more susceptible to fracture under friction force. This study contributes to understanding the high-temperature lubrication mechanisms of Nb-contained oxides.

Microstructure, hardness and wear resistance of AlCoCrFeNiTax (x=0, 0.1, 0.3) high-entropy alloys enhanced by laser remelting and Ta addition

Feiyu Ge et al.

Summary: Laser remelting (LR) treatment was used to regulate the microstructure of AlCoCrFeNiTax high-entropy alloys. The addition of Ta element promoted the formation of a Laves phase. After LR treatment, the grains were refined and a dense remelting layer was formed on the surface of the alloy. Additionally, the hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the alloys were improved by the combined effects of different strengthening mechanisms.

Synthesis of a high-entropy (TiVCrMo)3AlC2 MAX and its tribological properties in a wide temperature range

Cheng-Feng Du et al.

Summary: A new high-entropy (TiVCrMo)3AlC2 MAX material with a solid solution of Ti, V, Cr, and Mo atoms has been synthesized. The tribological properties and wear mechanism of the high-entropy MAX material at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 800 oC have been systematically studied. The high-entropy structure contributes to improved hardness and oxidation resistance, resulting in dry-sliding behavior at temperatures up to 600 degrees C. At 800 degrees C, hydrodynamic lubrication occurs, enhancing the lubricity of the high-entropy (TiVCrMo)3AlC2 MAX material.

Homogeneous solid-solution formation in Fe2O3-Al2O3 system observed by TEM, XAFS, and Mossbauer spectroscopy

Hayato Nakaishi et al.

Summary: We characterized a mechanically alloyed (Fe2O3)1-x(Al2O3)x solid solution with corundum-type structure using TEM, EXAFS, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results showed the homogeneity of cation distribution and the variation of magnetic property with composition. HR-TEM revealed that the crystallite size of the solid solution is 10-20 nm and the lattice spacing is consistent with Vegard's law. EXAFS measurements indicated a monotonic decrease in Fe-Fe distance with aluminum substitution, while Fe-O was not significantly altered. Mössbauer spectroscopy showed a gradual change in spectra from sextet peaks at x = 0 to doublet with increasing Al2O3 concentration up to x = 0.67, suggesting homogeneous substitution of aluminum ions in the corundum-type structure.

Effect of TiO2 addition amount on BaO-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-bonded Al2O3 ceramics

Yaoming Li et al.

Summary: A new type of glass-ceramic BCAS was developed to join Al2O3 ceramics, and TiO2 was added to promote the crystallization behavior of the glass-ceramics. Rutile TiO2 whiskers were observed to grow on the surface of Al2O3 ceramics in the joints, providing mechanical support. The density of TiO2 whiskers in the joint was found to be the largest when the amount of TiO2 added was 10% (wt%), resulting in the best strengthening effect with a shear strength of 94.33 MPa.

Effect of nanostructuring on thermal stability and decomposition of aluminium titanate (Al2TiO5): A phase transformation study

Abolfazl Azarniya et al.

Summary: The recent research focus has been on the thermal instability of aluminium titanate (AT) as a refractory ceramic, with findings indicating that different factors can influence its decomposition and physical properties. The study showed that reducing the grain size to 30 nm can destabilize AT, lowering the reaction temperature to 300 degrees C from 900 degrees C, but does not affect the majority of AT ceramic decomposition temperature. Additionally, the thermal instability of AT nanostructure exhibits slow kinetics, making it resistant to complete decomposition even with heat treatment at 1200 degrees C for 5 hours.
