Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global concern, and alternative antimicrobial agents to traditional antibiotics are in high demand. In this study, in silico methods were used to investigate potential antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from predatory myxobacteria. A total of 672 potential AMP sequences were extracted from eight complete myxobacterial genomes. Among them, 117 AMPs were predicted to have very good activity against more than two bacterial pathogens, and further characterization revealed their anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and biofilm active properties. In vitro assays showed high MIC values for synthesized AMPs against E. coli, but antibiofilm assays demonstrated a substantial reduction in numbers compared to traditional antibiotics. Additionally, some AMPs showed sequence similarity to proteins with known functions. The results suggest that myxobacterial AMPs are a promising source of novel antimicrobial agents with diverse biological properties.

Summary: Antioxidant peptides are effective in protecting against diseases caused by free radicals, and food-derived peptides are considered as potential alternatives to synthetic antioxidants because of their safety, high activity, and abundant sources. However, traditional wet experimental methods cannot effectively screen and understand the structure-activity relationship of antioxidant peptides. Therefore, the development of a reliable prediction platform for antioxidant peptides is crucial. This study presents AnOxPP, a platform for predicting antioxidant peptides using a bidirectional long short-term memory neural network and amino acid descriptors. The results showed that the optimized feature conversion method outperformed single-AADs and the model trained with the optimal descriptor SDPZ27 achieved higher accuracy on independent test sets. AnOxPP provides valuable insights into the structure-activity features of antioxidant peptides and serves as a useful tool for screening and designing peptide drugs.
