Semantic Space Theory: Data-Driven Insights Into Basic Emotions

Summary: In this paper, semantic space theory and its data-driven methods are presented. Through the largest studies on emotion-related experience, expression, and physiology, it is found that emotions are multidimensional and consist of blends of more than 20 distinct types of emotions. They cannot be simplified into low-dimensional structures and conceptual processes as assumed by constructivist accounts. Specific emotions are not separated by clear boundaries and often blend together. Emotion concepts, such as anger, play a primary role in emotional experience and recognition, surpassing core affect processes of valence and arousal. The article concludes by outlining studies that show how these data-driven discoveries serve as a basis for machine-learning models in larger-scale, more diverse studies of naturalistic emotional behavior.
